Various Indian scientists have died mysterious deaths over the period of time. Indian media has speculated conspiracy theories regarding the deaths of these scientists as they spanned in a certain time period and as many of them were nuclear scientists. Causes of these deaths include blasts in laboratories, hangings, road accidents, medicinal overdose and drowning in water bodies.
An RTI raised by activist Chetan Kothari was answered by saying that 197 employees of Department of Atomic Energy had committed suicide in the years between 1995 and 2010.[1]

The issue of mysterious deaths was also raised in Lok Sabha, the lower house of India's bicameral Parliament, in February 2014 (16th Lok Sabha). The then opposition party Bharatiya Janata Party's members A. T. Patil (of Jalgaon constituency) and Hansraj Gangaram Ahir (of Chandrapur constituency), both from Maharashtra, had staged the questions in Lok Sabha regarding unnatural deaths of the scientists and engineers in the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) and Atomic Power Stations.[2]
