A Tribute to a Great Teacher and disciplinarian Lieutenant Colonel Withanachchi Senaratne It is with deep regret that we learn the demise of Lt.Colonel Withanachchi Senaratne on the 30th of December 2010. His remains were cremated on the 1st of January 2011 at the Balagolla Public Cemetery, Kundasale amidst a large gathering of his Colleagues, relatives and friends. Hailing from the flourishing village of Dambarawa in close proximity to Kandy, he had his education at the well-known Beravatte’s College in Ampitiya. In due course he joined the teaching profession as an English teacher in 1948. Among the schools he served in were Beravatte’s College Ampitiya, Zahira College, Gampola and the well-known St Sylvester’s College, Kandy. In recognition of his capabilities the authorities appointed him in addition to his normal duties as the Commanding officer formerly Cadet Master of the School Cadet Corps. In this capacity he proved his skills and ability. He was rewarded for this by being made a Lt.Colonel of the Cadet Corps which rank he held with great honour and distinction. Whilst at St. Sylvester’s College, he was appointed Discipline Master. Here too he made his mark and was hailed a strict disciplinarian who brooked no nonsance. During the years 1984 to 1989 he served as the Commanding officer at the Akuramboda Military Training Centre and from 1989 to 1991 at the Viyani Camp in Mahiyangana. He performed all the onerous duties with his usual dedication and efficiency and acceptance to the relevant authorities. He also held the rank of Reserve Senior Superintendent of Police. Astrology was his second love and he gave it his undivided attention. He became an exponent on the subject and his reputation as a knowledgeable and reliable astrologer spread far and wide. His services were eagerly sought by all and sundry irrespective of their social status. His wife predeceased him and they had four children, three boys and a girl. One of the boys joined the Sri Lanka Army and was a Lieutenant in the 6th Artillery Regiment. He died in the year 1988 while in active service. The youngest son is an Attorney-at- Law practicing in Kandy. Lt. Colonel W Senaratne was held in high esteem by all who came in touch with him. He was a devout Buddhist and followed his religion with faith and devotion. Lt Colonel W Senaratne was 82 years at the time; he departed this world- twelve years more than the biblical age of three score and ten- May he attain the Supreme Bliss of Nibbana.
