Internalized oppression: the psychological injury resulting from systematic social inequity, including inequitable access to symbolic and material resources. (In everyday wisdom, we might hear this called out as "hurt people hurt people" which holds truth, and we also need to account for the role of institutions/organizatioins/policies, of unwritten rules, of culture/language/images, and of interpersonal interactions...) Oppression is trauma and it is complex and chronic. It lives inside people. The need to insert yourself as a gender is internalized oppression.(Dr. M. Smith, Auburn University) The pre-existing threat of trauma makes our body do what it takes to survive.
