Eric Hinton

Dr. Eric L. Hinton is Associate Professor of Music and Director of Bands at Susquehanna University where he conducts the University Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and Stadium Band. He teaches trumpet and conducting as well as courses in brass methods and the history of literature of the wind orchestra. Under his leadership, the Susquehanna University bands have performed at conferences of the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA), the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) and the National Association for Music Education (NAfME). Dr. Hinton is founder and director of the High School Wind Ensemble Institute, a summer 7-day residential experience devoted to wind ensemble and chamber music performance on the campus of Susquehanna University.

Dr. Hinton is the first African American conductor to receive a PhD in conducting from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire in England. He has worked extensively in Europe. For seven years, he served as the Head of Winds and Brass at the John-F.-Kennedy-Schule, a German-American bi-cultural, bilingual school in Berlin, Germany. In the United Kingdom, he was conductor and musical director of the Nottingham Symphonic Wind Orchestra and the Worcestershire Symphony Orchestra, which was founded by Edward Elgar in 1905. He also served as associate conductor of the Central England Ensemble and was founder and music director of the Telford New Symphony Orchestra. An impassioned music educator, Dr. Hinton was conductor of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire Junior School Symphony Orchestra and Wind Orchestra as well as the Birmingham Schools Wind Orchestra. He has also conducted youth wind orchestras in Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire, and led the Cambridgeshire Youth Wind Orchestra on tours of Ireland and France. In 2006, Dr. Hinton received an Honorary Fellowship (HonFRBC) from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire for his “service to music in the Midlands of England.” His professional affiliations include the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, College Band Directors National Association, National Association for Music Education, Pennsylvania Music Educators Association, International Trumpet Guild and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.

Dr. Hinton is in demand as a conductor, adjudicator, and clinician and has appeared with ensembles throughout the United States and Europe. In 2009, he conducted the Pennsylvania All-State Concert Band in Valley Forge, PA and has conducted region and festival bands in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, and Maryland. Recently, he conducted U.S. Army Europe Band in Heidelberg, Germany as a part of their Hands Across the Sea concert series. His book, Conducting the Wind Orchestra: Meaning, Gesture and Expressive Potential was published by Cambria Press in December, 2008.

Dr. Hinton received his undergraduate and master’s degrees from Northwestern University where he studied conducting and arranging with John P. Paynter, trumpet with Vincent Cichowicz and music education with Bennett Reimer and Don Owens. He received his PhD from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire in the United Kingdom where his primary teachers were Guy Woolfenden and Timothy Reynish. His performances with the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire Wind Orchestra have been broadcast on BBC Radio 3 as well as Lyric FM in Ireland.
