From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Articles and other stuff that is notable for bizarre and ridiculous reasons unrelated to subject matter.

This isn’t going to include the vast majority of stupid deletion nominations, vandalism incidents, pranks, jokes, ambiguous-but-likely trolling incidents and proposals otherwise we’d be here all day.

This page will also generally avoid predictable controversies, recent Wikidrama, or entries that revolve around individual users (all for obvious reasons).

Wikipedia[edit]

Articles— active[edit]

The Human Centipede (First Sequence)[edit]

Controversial body horror film with a disgusting premise, became a daily featured article on the front page to considerable backlash[1]

Virgin Killer[edit]

Album with a suggestively posed nude child on the cover, lead to Wikipedia being blocked as child pornography.

Star Trek: Into Darkness[edit]

Lead to an extraordinarily long dispute over whether the “I” in “into” should be capitalized

Gadsby (novel)[edit]

This curious fiction book was topic of a similarly odd war of words on if a digital information work should mimic it in lacking a particular glyph

Impressively long novel written entirely without the letter “e”, subject of a bizarre dispute over whether the article should be the same[2]

Pizza cheese[edit]

Pizza cheese jihadist!

During a deletion discussion on the article, someone was called a “Pizza Cheese Jihadist”, which is probably the funniest insult in Wikipedia history[3]

Autofellatio[edit]

This Buzzfeed News article explains it better than this page ever could

Cock and ball torture[edit]

Became a notorious copypasta meme due to its awkward, vulgar, and discomfort-inducing subject matter[4] The Talk page is also rather deranged.

Strumigenys ayersthey[edit]

First gamergate, now this? What is it with ants and right-wing political controversies on Wikipedia?

Ant named in honor of the nonbinary community. Was subject to anti-LGBT great-wrong-righting by a single-purpose account that unilaterally decided that “Longmaxila” was a much better name, scientific community be damned, and edited the article to reflect this.

Sponge[edit]

One of the most famous and important quotes in Wikipedia history

Has the dubious honor of illustrating the English version of Vandalism on Wikipedia

Neonicotinoid[edit]

At one point it was vandalized to call environmentalists “tree-hugging vagina faces”, which was apparently noteworthy enough to capture for posterity.[5]

Donkey punch[edit]

Presumably the image Dan Savage was talking about

Urban legend that punching the back of someone’s head during sex will make their anus or vagina tighten. In 2006, one concerned “Encyclopedia Geek” emailed Dan Savage about a debate on this article’s talk page regarding the health risks and asked him to “spare a few lines” about it. He dutifully responded (supposedly because he found his article’s page image “hyperflattering”) and the relevant column entry is now cited in the article to this day[6]

Boys Beware[edit]

What Jimmy didn't know was that Ralph was sick. A sickness that was not visible like smallpox, but no less dangerous and contagious: a sickness of the mind. You see, Ralph was a Pro-Gay Radical of the Liberal Communist Brain Trust...

Infamously cheesy 1960s anti-gay “education” film. The talk page features some pretty deranged entries, including one stating that the film is a highly accurate depiction of homosexuality and claims otherwise are only because of “death threats to psychologists”,[7] and another hypothesizing that the film was a false flag hoax made in the 2000s by the “Pro-Gay Radical chapter” of the “Liberal Communist Brain Trust”.[8]

Al-ʽUyun[edit]

At one point this article about a Saudi Arabian village was vandalized to claim the last remaining inhabitant was “Petier Griphon” [sic], “a hunter and explorer who saw THE LAND DEVOURER.” [sic] [9]

Natalia Poklonskaya[edit]

Natalia Poklonskaya looks on in embarrassment at her talk page

Russian politician who had a bunch of people simping over her back circa 2014 and drawing moe anime fanart of her. Her article was subject to some incredibly lengthy discussions about the matter, including which of the many, many, kawaii uguu versions of her to feature on the page.[10]

Stefan Molyneux[edit]

White nationalist conspiracy monger; in February 2022[11] his article was bombed with the following utterly bizarre and incoherent rant:

Every person who works for wiki should be ashamed. You are a racist and evil. The negative energy you generate will be out forth [sic] into you ten fold. That is the law of the universe. Stefan has excellent content that would enlighten you but these evil and racist wiki people will lie to try and ruin a person's life. I truly feel sorry for these wiki sickies, they have to live in their own brain with their evil thoughts. A curse don't unto [sic] thyself. Hey, try something different and spread good into the universe, before it's to [sic] late for yourself.

Futanari[edit]

Suspicious characters of the Futanari crime gang

Japanese term for hermaphrodite, closely associated with a hentai genre depicting feminine characters with male sexual organs. In May 2022 was very briefly replaced with a hoax article about a made-up Italian-American crime organization before being reverted almost immediately[12][13] which occurred again in June[14]

No Safe Spaces[edit]

At one point the talk page featured a comment bizarrely referring to the Jewish-American Dennis Prager as a Nazi[15]

Gamergate (ant)[edit]

Subject of a long dispute over whether it was more notable than Gamergate (harassment campaign) and thus should be privileged with the unmodified article title (or vice versa).[16][17][18]

List of films considered the worst[edit]

In addition to the existence of the article itself being controversial, with almost a dozen deletion nominations[19] going back to 2003[20] it briefly had a series of hoax movies added in 2022, such as “Lacey's Farting Problems (2023)” “Saya no Uta: The Movie (2024)” (which was supposedly panned for being bowdlerized to the level of a G rating) and “Kanye West's Circle of Evil (2025)” (“Kanye West fans hate this movie because it depicted him as a dictator who genocided [sic] people”).[21]

Turkey[edit]

They Might be Giants are gonna have a field day with this one.

After the government of Turkey changed its official English name to the Republic of Türkiye[22] there were no less than five attempts in one year to change the article name that all failed per WP:COMMONNAME.[23]

Rorschach test[edit]

Close your eyes, Stanley! This is all a spoiler!

SCANDALIZED the psychology world when the public domain inkblots and other supposedly confidential goodies were ”leaked” onto the the article, breaching test security that was intended to prevent subjects from “cheating” (having pre-established notions about the blots).[24] The talk page was a similar implosion of controversy[25] which of course leaked onto Commons, where the actual offending inkblot images are hosted.[26]

Mammary intercourse[edit]

At one point the article seemed to imply that the act (which involves zero penile-vaginal contact) could lead to pregnancy.[27] Someone also complained on the talk page about an image featuring a “creepy old woman” and a “salmon colored clown penis”.[28]

From Justin To Kelly[edit]

Film notable for its extremely poor reception. The lead was at one point edited to “explain” that the reason was supposedly “its criticism aimed for its gyrating losers and musical numbers” [sic].[29]

James A. Lindsay[edit]

American author and “cultural critic” known for pushing baseless conspiracy theories like white genocide, cultural Marxism and LGBT grooming. His talk page is periodically hit with complaints from his supporters, including an “edit request” (rant) so ridiculous it is either extremely good parody or indistinguishable from such:

“This is the most slanderous and deceitful communist slanted entry I have seen on this sold out communist slanted sight [sic]. Wikipedia needs to be called out and cleaned up.This is way more compromised, biased and deceptive than Twitter was before Musk bought it. Is Wikipedia colluding with the big government, globalist authoritarians and CommunistCCP [sic] as well? Certainly seems this is the case. As for the information published in the USA Wikipedia certainly knows that censorship and blatant SLANDER [sic] and extreme bias is not tolerated by the American people. Pathetic and this entry is so skewed that it constitutes slander and liable [sic]. Why is the truth so terrifying to wikipedia and the ideologues running the place? Because the TRUTH [sic] destroys every slanted lie wikipedia is trying to force on the people and it shines light on your unconstitutional communist impositions [sic]

[30]

Sock puppet account[edit]

Was once edited to promote Larry Sanger’s dubious claims of Wikipedia socking itself (or something)… by a confirmed sock puppet.[31]

Reality[edit]

Stephen Colbert (or more likely Dr. Stephen Colbert) once told his audience to satirically vandalize this article and offered a five USD reward for it.[32]

Street Sharks[edit]

Adam West, not voice actor for Street Sharks

Obscure cartoon that some guy obsessively vandalized the article of to create a Mandela effect version of reality and “prove history is meaningless on the internet”.[33][34]

Andrew Tate[edit]

Kickboxer and self-declared misogynist who got dissed by Greta Thunberg. His fight statistics were then updated accordingly to state that she knocked him out.[35]

IUCN Red List endangered species (Animalia)[edit]

At one point the article was vandalized to list “white kids” as an endangered species,[36] which ordinarily wouldn’t be very notable or interesting; however it somehow managed to avoid getting caught for over three months.[37]

Honda Concerto[edit]

the greatest Honda Concerto of All Time [sic]

Was once the subject of a lengthy edit war by an obsessive Pakistani[38] Concerto owner who was desperate to make sure the lead image was his own, famous,[39] special,[40] BEST[41] Concerto.[42]

2020 United States presidential election in Pennsylvania[edit]

The offending map in question

At one point a map showing “results by Catholic diocese” was added for the purpose of a Twitter shitpost.[43] This led to an extremely long flamewar on the talk page[44] which included the following nonsensical legal threat which bore a distinct resemblance to the infamous Navy SEAL copypasta:

You admins are honestly turning Wikipedia into fucking Communist Russia at this point. Literally banning people who make quality contributes [sic] to Wikipedia while you [sic] asses sit in your mothers [sic] basement just waiting for someone to add something not to your damn perfection [sic] and then you go full schizo. I will be in contact with my lawyers and will be sending all your terminally online asses to jail.

[45]

The Unicorn (song)[edit]

In 2012, an IP user added… this… to the talk page. If that wasn’t strange enough, the IP is apparently registered to the United States Department of the Treasury.[46]

Bill O'Reilly (political commentator)[edit]

Subject to at least nine discussions on whether he should have the unmodified page name, in competition with Bill O'Reilly (cricketer). (Obviously neither have won).[47]

SCP Foundation[edit]

Apparently it was once popular to request that I, SCP-426, be described in first person, which is canonically the only way I can be described.[48]

Michoud Assembly Facility[edit]

Why’d NASA rename this place after a Canadian who’s still alive, anyway?

Subject of an incredibly elaborate[49][50] and long-lasting[51] hoax claiming that the facility had been partially renamed to the “Chris A. Hadfield Rocket Factory (CAHRF)”[52][53].

Death by sawing[edit]

I CUT A MAN IN HALF AND FIXED HIM WITH FLEX TAPE!

For some reason this topic attracts an unusually high amount of vandalism given its morbid and obscure nature, including humorous claims that it is “Phil Swift’s favorite form of torture”[54] and that Javonte Williams was executed by the method after a fumble.[55]

Boops boops[edit]

Boops boops in a bucket

The talk page is home to a very serious discussion over the inclusion of the caption “Boops boops in a bucket” that’s been going on sporadically since 2015 and apparently necessitated an RfC.[56]

Opinion polling for the next United Kingdom general election[edit]

The current longest article at 676,619 bytes.[57] Before that, the longest page was List of Glagolitic manuscripts (now split into 8 smaller articles), which was rather amusingly tagged with a maintenance template stating it was “too long to navigate comfortably”.[58]

David Lammy[edit]

Subject of a long-running debate on whether he’s best described as a British politician or an English politician (currently described as the latter), which like Boops boops in a bucket apparently necessitated an RfC that ended without consensus.[59] England being a component of Britain, the situation is obviously a case of Buridan's ass.

Megan Rapinoe[edit]

At one point this article was edited to claim Rapinoe was the President of the United States.[60]

Paracas Candelabra[edit]

The easternmost point on Earth, per Indra

Ancient Peruvian petroglyph, subject of bizarre repeated claims that it is referenced in the Ramayana,[61][62] specifically that it was made by Indra to “signify the easternmost point on the earth as a reference” and was also referred to by Sugriva.[63]

Ravana[edit]

Filled with cod, apparently

Character in the aforementioned Ramayana, at one point the article stated that “it is a matter of fact the demon tendency was filled with cod in Ravana [sic].”[64] Given that the editor who likely added this incomprehensible statement reverted the thing about cod, that at least was some kind of typo.[65]

Cneoridium dumosum (Nuttall) Hooker F. Collected March 26, 1960, at an Elevation of about 1450 Meters on Cerro Quemazón, 15 Miles South of Bahía de Los Angeles, Baja California, México, Apparently for a Southeastward Range Extension of Some 140 Miles[edit]

The longest article title at 250 characters[66] The longest title without spaces is Lopadotemachoselachogaleokranioleipsanodrimhypotrimmatosilphiokarabomelitokatakechymenokichlepikossyphophattoperisteralektryonoptekephalliokigklopeleiolagoiosiraiobaphetraganopterygon (211 characters).[67]

Gay Nigger Association of America[edit]

Unfortunately named Internet trolling group that has been subject to 41 deletion discussions, the most of any article.[68]

2024 Arkansas House of Representatives election[edit]

The current longest “stub” at 140218 bytes.[69]

Maryland[edit]

Possibly the first article to ever be vandalized, on 24th of January 2001[70][71]

List of Guggenheim Fellowships awarded in 2006[edit]

In 2008, an IP changed the entry for Helen DeWitt to “Mike Oxbig” (say it quickly if you don’t get it).[72] This somehow lasted until 2023,[73] becoming the longest lasting mainspace vandalism in Wikipedia history (15 years, 29 days).[74]

Articles— deleted[edit]

Quazer Beast[edit]

Hoax article about a purported mythological sea monster, developed a minor fan club due to its peculiar charm.

Upper Peninsula War[edit]

Notoriously elaborate hoax article about a war that didn’t happen

ARS Public School[edit]

Unremarkable secondary school in India subject to three incredibly long, contentious deletion arguments before finally being cut[75]

Battle for Dream Island[edit]

Popular but non-notable Total Drama-style web series that has been deleted from mainspace three times[76] and deleted from draftspace six times[77] not counting the numerous times it was re-created or re-submitted under alternate titles, trojaned into unrelated drafts or recreated as a fake article.[78][79][80][81][82][83][84][85]

Regional at Best[edit]

Twenty-One Pilots album that is not individually notable. Another perennial recreation nuisance, with “three separate AfDs for this album, a deletion review for the third, and the primary title page being a locked redirect” as well as a draftspace recreation.[86]

Countless individual Pokémon[edit]

Wikipedia once infamously had individual articles for all contemporary species (last clocked at over 400) before the overwhelming majority were merged into large list articles.[87] The extremely obscure human character Karen was also notorious for having a rather pointless stub article.[88]

Thomas Forbes[edit]

Nonexistent English poet and the longest lasting hoax on Wikipedia at 17.95 years (2006-2024).[89]

Bicholim conflict[edit]

Not to encourage creating hoaxes, but… managing to get good article status on a fake article is pretty impressive.

A hoax article about an imaginary war between the Portuguese Empire and the Maratha Empire so convincing it somehow achieved good article status.[90]

Radio Studio 54 Network[edit]

The article in the largest number of languages that aren’t English (139).[91] The English version was deleted in 2020.[92]

Brent’s T.V.[edit]

Non-notable band that was nominated for deletion in January 2006, actually deleted in October 2006, and was marked as speedy (cough) deleted… SIXTEEN YEARS LATER.[93][94]

Probability derivations for making low hands in Omaha hold 'em[edit]

The longest deleted article at 305 kilobytes.[95]

The weather in London[edit]

Has been deleted a whopping 81 times, making it the most deleted article.[96] currently just redirects to Climate of London.

Wikipedia namespace[edit]

Randy in Boise[edit]

Subject to lengthy disputes over whether saying Randy the village idiot is from Boise, Idaho is offensive[97]

Esperanza[edit]

A failed project to promote friendship and editor retention that ironically ended up becoming a divisive quasi-independent clique.

Wikipe-tan[edit]

The moe anthropomorphic unofficial mascot of Wikipedia. Subject to constant disputes (including three deletion discussions) due to the character’s vocal hatedom (and the hatedom surrounding anime and manga fandom in general)[98]

Articles for deletion[edit]

Was once nominated for deletion as “useless”[99]

Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/World War III (2nd nomination)[edit]

A successful deletion nomination of a deletion nomination (albeit a fake one).

Wikipedia:Arbitration Committee Elections December 2018/Coordination/Mass message[edit]

The current largest page on English Wikipedia at 3,736,885 bytes.[100] (Warning: above link may crash your browser or simply not load)

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Mayoral elections[edit]

A bundle nomination so “catastrophically huge” it received its own shortcut, WP:CLUSTERFUCK. Also the most pages ever nominated at once (271).[101]

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Mass killings under communist regimes (4th nomination)[edit]

The longest deletion page of all time at 510,874 bytes, with the longest deletion talk page of all time at 194,232 bytes.[102]

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Le Punching-Ball et la Vache à lait : La Critique universitaire nord-américaine face au Surréalisme[edit]

The longest running AfD discussion at 18 years, 115 days.[103] Closed as “unknown” but deleted anyway.

Other namespaces[edit]

Portal:current events[edit]

Was once nominated for deletion as “a bunch of nonsense” and “non-noticeable [sic]”[104]

User:UBX/User drinks Coca-Cola[edit]

Was nominated for deletion as “promotional”[105]

user:Eumat114/toolongtobetrue[edit]

The former largest page on English Wikipedia at 4,096,130 bytes.[106] until it was blanked in 2022[107] and subsequently deleted.[108] Due to the extreme length normally being impossible due to technical limitations, the user had to resort to some convoluted template trickery to create the page.[109]

User:Levi Kambai/Userboxes/Hot Dog[edit]

Sandwich?

Subject of an actual edit war over whether a hot dog constituted a sandwich and should be categorized as such.[110]

Non-English Wikipedias[edit]

Hentai, Japanese ver.[edit]

Amusingly, the language from which the term is derived has an almost comically tame version of the article[111] compared with many Wikipedias, which feature[112] a very explicit erotic artwork of a couple engaged in lovemaking. This is possibly due to “hentai” generally not referring to pornographic manga and anime in Japanese.

Station hertzienne de Pierre-sur-Haute, French ver.[edit]

I bet next we’ll be freaking out over the copyright to this thing… already happened

Article about a seemingly unremarkable military radio station which later resulted in pressure and eventually legal threats from the French interior intelligence agency to delete the article, which resulted in a massive publicity boost to it.[113]

Luis Rubiales, Spanish ver.[edit]

You have insulted my honor, good sir! We shall settle this at dawn!

Scandal-prone president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation who in 2022 took legal action against Spanish Wikipedia for hosting content DAMAGING TO HIS HONOR![114]

Outside Wikipedia[edit]

Pages on other projects[edit]

Anonymous quotes page, Wikiquote[edit]

An apple, an egg, and a nut, you may eat after a slut. —Shakespeare, probably[115]

While no longer the case, for much of its history this article was a no-man’s land of random unsourced garbage,[116][117][118] including content such as:

  • Generic figures of speech like “shit happens” or idioms like “an elephant never forgets”
  • Numerous dad jokes and coffee mug/T-shirt/bumper sticker sayings like “I can tune a guitar, but I can't tüna [sic] fish”
  • Patent nonsense like “Mr. Heinz would be happy!!!” and non sequiturs like “And all the people say?” [sic]
  • At least one instance of casual racism that wasn’t even a real saying (“Don't feed the monkeys! They like soul-food best!”)
  • Numerous well-known quotes with their well known authors given (do people even know what “anonymous” means?)

Sideboob category, Wikimedia Commons[edit]

Subject of a lengthy dispute over whether the term was inappropriate and/or misogynistic, including claims that the mere act of categorizing photos of breasts is “creepy”[119]

Category:Pedophilia and Category:Lolicon, Wikimedia Commons[edit]

Obviously the image Mr. Sanger was concerned about

The two categories became infamous in 2010 when Larry Sanger reported them to the FBI as containing child pornography, without specifying what images he was even concerned about[120]

Requests for comment/Stop accepting cryptocurrency donations, Meta-wiki[edit]

Proposal subject to a ludicrous amount of blatant canvassing and vote-brigading from crypto bros, as well as Holocaust references[121]

Category:Corporate Memphis, Wikimedia Commons[edit]

For reasons we still do not fully understand, this category was placed in the super-category of Saturn Devouring his Son by Goya[122]

User talk:Jacksuck, Wikimedia Commons[edit]

French GDILF amateur pornstar (or more likely someone posing as such) who was generously gifted with the thirstiest barnstar in Wikimedia history.

Category:Human penis and subcategories, Wikimedia Commons[edit]

Pictured: what Commons has more than enough of

Infamous for being a huge dumping ground for exhibitionism[123][124][125]

Category:Imitated fellatio, Wikimedia Commons[edit]

Nominated for discussion as “not correct” with no further explanation.[126]

Category:1, Wikipedia Commons[edit]

Incessantly misused, particularly for selfies of really smug-looking Arabic speaking dudes for some incomprehensible reason.[127]

Entire Wikimedia projects[edit]

Volapuk Wikipedia[edit]

Almost the entire project was created by one man and a massive bot army as what was basically viral marketing for a nearly-extinct constructed language

Scots Wikipedia[edit]

Criticisms including perceived pointlessness, editorial inexperience, and butchering of the Scots Leid

Siberian Wikipedia[edit]

Now-closed Wikipedia based on a hoax language[128]

Amharic Wikipedia[edit]

Amharic edition of Wikipedia. Infamous for having a tyrannical, virulently homophobic former admin/de facto owner[129] who blocked user with zero edits just for having a non-offensive use of “queer” in their username.[130]

Cree Wikipedia[edit]

Still more active editors than Citizendium[131]

Cree language edition of Wikipedia. The smallest active Wikipedia as of March 2023[132] at 12 articles[133]

Inari Sámi Wikipedia[edit]

Inari Sámi language edition of Wikipedia. With just 400 speakers according to the 2018 Finnish census,[134] it is the least-spoken living, natural language with a Wikipedia of more than 3000 articles.[135]

Cheyenne Wikipedia[edit]

Cheyenne language edition of Wikipedia. Possibly the least-spoken natural language with a Wikipedia of any size, with about 320 speakers [136] and 685 articles.[137]

Northern Luri Wikipedia[edit]

Despite the name, this wiki was not written in anything resembling standard Luri (Northern or otherwise), but rather something that can only be described as the Luri equivalent of Anglish— essentially, the whole wiki was written in a constructed language created by one user by removing any Persian or Arabic loanwords from Luri and replacing them with loanwords derived from Kurdish. The result was, unsurprisingly, incomprehensible to native speakers, and the wiki was shut down in 2021.[138]

Montenegrin Wikipedia[edit]

Hypothetical Montenegrin language edition of Wikipedia. Has been proposed and rejected four times, with a fifth proposal currently in limbo.[139] This is largely because Montenegrin is not truly a language but a standardized form of Serbo-Croatian, and the other three major forms of Serbo-Croatian (Serbian, Croatian and Bosnian) received Wikipedias before the rules for new projects changed to only allow languages that are meaningfully different from those that already have projects.

Middle English Wikipedia[edit]

Hypothetical Middle English edition of Wikipedia, proposed and rejected five times[140] due to dead languages no longer being allowed.[141] An Ancient Greek language Wikipedia has been proposed in various forms about six times,[142] and been rejected for the same reasons in five of those (the latest incarnation is still pending).

Images and other media files[edit]

File:Debbie Does Dallas.ogv[edit]

Legendary Golden Age porno that has fallen into the public domain. Has been through more than 8 deletion discussions with basically every argument in the book given, from your basic “ew pr0n” and “not educational” to copyright lawyering and claims of performers being underaged.[143]

File:Wikipe-tan Cartoon - Something is missing.png[edit]

Nominated for deletion due to supposedly being “a sexualised graphic representing a minor”[144]

File:Jumping Wikipe-tan.svg[edit]

During the deletion discussion this image was accused of being “repulsive” and infuriating to female contributors due to depicting “a young girl with bare midriff and crotch showing“, as well as “bizarre”.[145]

File:Paul Stanley looking sober.jpg[edit]

Image of the KISS frontman, apparently drunk, which was formerly on the Wikipedia image blacklist for vandalism prevention despite not being graphic or offensive like the vast majority of files on the list.[146] Similar oddball cases are file:Boyfriend-2.png and File:Divine in Heaven T-shirt.jpg.

Numerous lolicon-related files on Commons[edit]

Most of the images in the category were created by a banned user with a somewhat notorious internet reputation, or otherwise derivatives of his work. This has lead to over-the-top controversies like this and this. Ones that aren’t by him are also frequently nominated (even when they’re fully clothed and look like they might be teens or young adults, like this one, which is no longer in the category)

File:Lolicon Sample.png[edit]

Has been nominated for deletion as child pornography twice due to its title even though it’s blatantly not pornographic and barely even suggestive.

File:Banner wikipe-tan 1.png[edit]

Nominated for deletion with the rationale “The picture with the bloody content of the request to delete! [sic]”[147]

Wikipe-tan full length.svg[edit]

Despite being completely innocent and inoffensive, this image has been subject to a bizarre and slightly disturbing amount of hatred, having been called at various times “creepy”[148] “pedophilic”[149] “horrifically ugly”[150]Original research[151] “crude”[152] and “an embarrassment”[153] as well as provoking multiple instances of racist insults[154][155]

File:Five Nights At Freddy's Security Breach.gif[edit]

NASA hard at work on the new FNAF game

Blatantly unfree file taken from the game that was claimed to be “PD-NASA”.[156] FNAF: Security Breach is not by NASA.

File:Flag of the United States.svg[edit]

Subject to extensive debates as to what the exact right colors are.[157]

File:Wikipedia Blackout Screen.jpg[edit]

Was subject to two utterly frivolous copyright-related deletion nominations— first due to the presence of the Google Chrome GUI[158] and later due to the tiny Twitter logo incorporated in the image.[159] Bitterly ironic considering the nature of the bill the blackout was protesting…

Files created by Seedfeeder[edit]

At one point were mass-nominated for deletion because someone baselessly suspected them of being traced.[160]

File:Psychoactive Drugs.jpg[edit]

The talk page had two users complimenting the picture… and also the drug collection it depicts.[161]

File:Sexting.jpg[edit]

On March 9th 2015, a random IP user demanded that this image be “cancelled” for the unforgivable crime of being “pure nonsense”.[162] This accusation was disputed two years later by another IP, who found the image to be “the most brilliant on Wikipedia” [sic] and awarded it an Internet.[163] This, in turn, was overturned about a year later by yet another IP, who went beyond the even the original accuser and officially canceled both the uploader and anyone who supported the image.[164]

File:National- und Handelsflagge 1935-1945 (HK links versetzt).svg[edit]

Was once nominated for deletion with the rationale “.......” [sic] [165]

File:Fishmarket 01.jpg[edit]

Despite becoming a featured-quality image, this picture was dismissed as “bad” by a talkpage user because they didn’t like “fish corpses”.[166]

file:Nagasakibomb.jpg[edit]

One of the most important, iconic, and infamous images of the 20th century (if not all time), this photograph was nominated for deletion because an IP thought “ it is horrifying and disturbs me in ways i cannot explain” [sic], to which the closing admin bathetically responded: “ It is horrifying. It should disturb you. That's the whole point: it is total war taken to its logical conclusion, it is man's inhumanity to man at its basest, it is a mirror of ourselves when we allow the better angels of our nature to be silenced. Deleting a picture won't make history go away, and certainly won't make such a thing less likely to happen again. Or some shit.”[167]

File:Winter Lady Aroused in Sheer Bikini.png[edit]

Piece of furry erotica nominated for deletion as a “selfie”, despite being a drawing of a fictional character.[168]

file:Origin-of-the-World.jpg[edit]

Famous painting and rare example of classic fine art being blacklisted as troll bait. Other examples of similar image blocks are File:Édouard-Henri Avril (29).jpg, file:Pissing-illustration.jpg, File:Gloeden, Wilhelm von (1856-1931) - n. 0941 - da - Amore e arte, p. 70.jpg, and File:Yoshitoshi tanuki.jpg

file:PrideandPrejudiceCH3detail.jpg[edit]

Bizarrely categorized as “Major urinary protein or alpha-2u-globulin” at one point.[169] Even more unbelievably, this is not (technically) a miscategorization.

Project Geekography photos[edit]

Photography project depicting bodypainted nude women as computer technology. Subject to more than 27 deletion nominations due to its controversial nature.[170]

File:Temple of the Tooth Relic, Kandy..jpg [sic][edit]

Slotted to be undeleted in 2160, currently the furthest in the future anything is set to be restored.[171] That is, if the world isn’t destroyed in a nuclear war by then.

Numerous photos of the Eiffel Tower[edit]

Subject of a long-running copyright dispute, not due to the tower itself (which is out of copyright due to its age even though France has no freedom of panorama) but due to the lighting (a modern addition) being considered an “artwork” and therefore under copyright.[172]

Digital reproductions of paintings in the National Portrait Gallery, London[edit]

Subject of a copyright dispute between the NPG and the Wikimedia Foundation, with the former claiming the works counted as copyrighted modern photos of public domain works and the latter claiming they were uncopyrightable 1:1 reproductions of public domain works (confused yet?). In any case the latter is the Anerican legal interpretation, and the only one that matters for the US-based WMC.

File:Ernst Ritter.jpg; File:Bundesarchiv Bild 146-1987-121-30A, Hugo Sperrle Recolored.png, File:Ernst von Weizsäcker.jpg; File:Bundesarchiv Bild 146-1971-033-01, Alfred Jodl color.jpg[edit]

All of the above files were nominated for deletion as “Nazi fancruft”.[173]

File:Streisand Estate.jpg[edit]

Subject to multiple attempts to suppress its existence[174] despite only being famous for an attempt to suppress its existence.

file:Wiki-gokkun.png[edit]

Implicitly referenced in the edutainment web cartoon Ecchication by ZONE-sama, where the character ZONE-tan humorously describes it as “creepy”.[175] The file talk is also amusing in its own right. (Word of warning: the above link is beyond NSFW even in the context of a page with L'Origine du monde on it) (not to be confused with the citation link, not that it isn’t questionably appropriate for work)

File:Transparent 26Bytes.gif[edit]

The smallest file on Wikipedia and probably also Wikimedia Commons at (unsurprisingly) 26 bytes.[176]
