Hi Mr. Americano!

Hi my dear Americano! Sorry about the belated reply - I was in a sort-of-wikibreak, and I was only able to make a few edits until now. I see ViolinGirl clarified the matter about the confusion between our userpages, so I'll just tell you that I simply love yours (isn't she adorable? She actually praises my page when hers is so awesome!). Someday, we should get together and talk about page design. I also read with interest your thoughts about how absorbing WP can be - indeed, sometimes finding the limits between anjoying the place and getting obsessed with it can be somewhat difficult. But eventually, they become clear. Whether or not one decides to actually stay within or outside said limits, is quite another thing ;) You also strike as a quite a thoughtful and insightful person, and I always trust my first impression. I also look forward to talk more with you in the future. If you need anything, or if you just feel like talking, please, don't hesitate to drop me a line. Regards, Phædriel tell me - 00:54, 5 February 2006 (UTC)

First off, let me say I love your name. How did you think it up? (Or does it, perhaps, come from a Comanche word?) And even though I deleted my earlier comments (to clear up confusion), they fit you too: Your taste is excellent, and your page conveys a dynamic personality. (I'm impressed you're writing your own book.) As to the confusion, I think I was browsing the userpage nom's in dire need of caffeine and simply couldn't understand why ViolinGirl's page came up when I was clicking your name. (It turns out that you were the nominator, and she was the nominee.) Now fully awake, I look forward to talking about page design sometime. Take care. - ElAmericano | talk 21:30, 5 February 2006 (UTC)
The more I look to your page, the more beautiful I find it, hun. It's so inspiring, and it pleasant to watch. Oh well, but i came here to talk, not to look! ;) Again, thank you so much for the kind words - undeserved as they are! Regarding my name, in fact I just came by it when reading about some computer game, but for some reason it caught my attention right away; and after trying (so naif of me!) to register "Sharon" and "SharonK", only to find out they were already taken, I tried this one instead... then again, I didn't expect I would become so involved back then. I'll keep coming back here to see any improvements you make in the beautiful design, and please drop by mine and visit me any time you wish. Kisses, Phædriel tell me - 21:28, 7 February 2006 (UTC)
Hey Phædriel, I love the changes you made to your page. Not only do I like the way you design, I like the way you write. So fresh and anti-boring. Sorry for not replying to your message earlier: I've just realized that my talk page, being transcluded, won't notify me when I get new messages. Do you know how I can fix that problem? Oh, and thanks so much for the kind words about my page. They go a long way. ;) Have an awesome day. - ElAmericano | talk 18:27, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

Another Esperanzial note...

Hi again Esperanzians! Well, since our last frolic in the realms of news, the Advisory Council has met twice more (see WP:ESP/ACM2 and WP:ESP/ACM3). As a result, the charter has been ammended twice (see here for details) and all of the shortcuts have been standardised (see the summary for more details). Also of note is the Valentines ball that will take place in the Esperanza IRC channel on the 14th of February (tomorrow). It will start at 6pm UTC and go on until everyone's had enough! I hope to see you all there! Also, the spamlist has been dissolved - all Esperanzians will now recieve this update "newsletter".

The other major notice I need to tell you about is the upcoming Esperanza Advisory Council Elections. These will take place from 12:00 UTC on February 20th to 11:59 UTC on February 27th. The official handing-over will take place the following day. Candidates are able to volunteer any time before the 20th, so long as they are already listed on the members list. Anyone currently listed on the memberlist can vote. In a change since last time, if you have already been a member of the leadership, you may run again. Due to the neutrality precident, I will not vote for anyone.

Yours, as ever, Esperanzially,

Sorry about that subst I did on your talk page. I have auto replace on with AWB and it was only suppose to subst warning templates such as {{test}}. I don't know how did that happen. My apologies. --Ichiro (会話|+|投稿記録|メール) 19:31, 14 February 2006 (UTC)

User page nomination comment

From User talk:Sceptre

You may want to take a second look at the nomination of your page for Esperanza's Userpage award. (Click the link you've provided.) - ElAmericano (dímelo) 20:49, 14 February 2006 (UTC)

Comment on userpage

From User talk:ClockworkSoul

You asked here if you were missing something concerning your userpage, why it hadn't been nominated, etc. I think I may see the "problem." Do you like small fonts or have a large screen? See, to me (I'm on a 12" Powerbook, normal size), the page looks like three equal-width columns, with the middle one filled but the other two empty at the bottom. At first, I thought you just designed your page like that, but then I zoomed out (ie, made my fonts, etc., smaller onscreen) and saw that they were equally filled at the smallest possible font size. Your page looks excellent at that level, so you may want a disclaimer at the top of your page saying "Best viewed ... etc., etc." (I know my page looks like crap except in Safari and sometimes Firefox, so I've just included one on my pages.) Just my two cents. - ElAmericano (dímelo) 20:57, 14 February 2006 (UTC)

  • Thanks fo rthe user page advice: it's much appreciated! Would you mind taking a screenshot of what my page looks like under your normal browsing conditions? It may help me figure some things out. Many thanks! – ClockworkSoul 21:04, 14 February 2006 (UTC)
Here's a pic of the top, the middle, and the near-bottom of your page, as viewed from Safari. (It's the same for me on Firefox, except you have nice-looking rounded corners.)

Thanks! Hmm... it looks quite a bit different on my machine with 1280 x 1024 resolution. I'll have to find some way of evening things out. Cheers! – ClockworkSoul 02:25, 15 February 2006 (UTC)

Happy Valentine's day!

Happy Valentine's Day, my sweet dear Americano!

Hola

From User talk:Rune.welsh

-- Rune Welsh | ταλκ 01:44, 15 February 2006 (UTC)

Hi there!

How are you doing, hun? First of all, please forgive for the three-day delay to reply your message - the new Wikiproject I just started is surely consuming most of my Wikitime these days. I just wanted to drop by and see how you're doing, and thank you warmly for your kind words towards my writing style - nobody has ever told me that, and I must tell you I am moved. I have no words myself but to thank you wholeheartedly. Just as you said, your words go a long way too :) On a side note, I noticed that you transcluded your talk page. I can't think of a way that could warn you when you get new messages, tho... my knowledge of wikicode is rather limited :/ Oh, and one last thing: I intend to nominate your Userpage for next week's contest.. unless you wanna object! ;) Hugs, Phædriel tell me - 22:19, 15 February 2006 (UTC)

Hi, this image has been tagged as "orphaned fair use" by a bot. According to the fair use criteria, fair use images are not allowed on user pages, so this image could be deleted. Mushroom (Talk) 01:47, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

La constitución española

From User talk:Miguel

- ElAmericano | talk 01:39, 18 January 2006 (UTC)

Can these be used in the Wikipedia: namespace?

I'd like to make use of some of the following icons for a menu on a page in the Wikipedia namespace, but I need to track down information on the legalities of doing so before I proceed. What do you know of the licenses, copyrights, and trademark rights to these icons?

96 - a link is included on this page to a crude translation of the author's permission. Though it's hard to tell, because the translation is pretty rough.

Image:Finder icon.png Image:Pages icon.png Image:Apple Dictionary Icon.png Image:ICal Icon.png Image:IPhoto Icon.png Image:Apple iDisk Icon.png Image:ISync icon.png

Though it appears that these icons are from a trademarked program. So I'm still not sure if they can be displayed as menu items for a page. Any help you could provide in tracking down the information clarifying to what uses we can legally put these icons to would be most appreciated. --Go for it! 13:27, 15 March 2006 (UTC)

Graphics

Hello, I was just wondering if I could create a graphic for your user and talk page. I'm not forcing it on you, of course; I just stumbled upon your user page from the User Page awards page, and I thought, "Why not?" So, if my offer interests you, please feel free to drop me a line. For some examples of my work, don't hesitate to jump into the fire! --M o P 05:50, 15 March 2006 (UTC)

P.S. Please also inform me of what you'd like in your picture.

No problem; don't feel pressured, you can take your time. And I hope it's ok that I posted here; I didn't want to start a new section, as that would be useless cluttering. -M o P 05:52, 17 March 2006 (UTC)
I have a few ideas for a pic/logo, if you're still up to it (I'm not sure which would be easier or more aesthetically pleasing, so you can decide):
  1. Something patriotic in the background, with my name in the foreground,
  2. something scenic (like a sunset, etc.), with my name in the foreground, or
  3. something artistic with coffee, again with my name in the foreground.
As far as fonts go, I like a lot of different ones. I'm not a fan of fixed-width fonts or of arial, but I do like Verdana, Optima, Zapfino, Trebuchet MS, and Skia, among others. You can use your discretion.
Thanks again for the offer. - ElAmericano (dímelo) 18:02, 7 April 2006 (UTC)
Hmm, I'm getting drawn to all of them. I'd say the sunset comes in first place; however, I can create all three and let you decide. _-M o P-_ 18:35, 7 April 2006 (UTC)
You really don't have to make all three—that seems like a ton of work—but feel free if you really enjoy that sort of thing. I myself like the sunset a lot. Maybe if the logo works out, I can design a color scheme based on it. I'm not really sure where to get a legal "artistic" sunset picture though. - ElAmericano (dímelo) 05:00, 8 April 2006 (UTC)

Pictures on userpage

Hi there, ElAmericano. I'm sorry to be the bringer of bad news on our first introduction, but I have to ask politely that you replace those images you have in the bar at the top of your pages. All but the leftmost one (and actually probably that too) are used under fair use, and the Wikipedia:Fair use criteria (#9 in particular) doesn't allow their use outside of articles. This is because it is felt by the Wikimedia Foundation that there is not a fair-use defence for such material outside of articles that are talking about the subject of the image or the image itself (this is, after all, the reason that the law allows fair usage in the first place). On userpages, the images are essentially just decorations, and it's not really 'fair' use to take someone else's rightfully copyrighted work and use it just because it was lying around. So the peson who got it wrong was the original uploader rather than you, who simply found the images and used them. But can I ask you to replace them (immediately) with nice free images instead? If you look around, there's a bunch of so-called 'Crystal' icons that I am sure have excellent, free replacements. Thanks a lot. -Splashtalk 23:58, 16 March 2006 (UTC) (PS: I originally left this message using the link you provide, but it turns out that it goes to your archive, so I removed it and dropped it here instead.)

That's great, thanks. -Splashtalk 00:02, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

Regarding Image:ElAmericano icon.png, it was deleted by User:Mo0, apparently because the font used in it qualifies the whole image as fair use. I suggest you simply reupload a functionally identical image which uses a free font, and get some free icons from the Crystal, Noia, or similar series at the commons (check the icons category); your user page will look better than ever. ;) Take care, —Nightstallion (?) 12:05, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

I am not entirely sure how Nightstallion has determined this. All the deletion log reveals is that it was tagged, by you, as fair use. Since it was not in use in article, it got deleted after the notification message you received a few sections up. Did you tag it as fair use because of the reason Nightstallion gives? -Splashtalk 13:05, 17 March 2006 (UTC)
I had assumed that it was an Apple-specific font, or something like that; either way, that's for ElAmericano himself to answer. ;) —Nightstallion (?) 13:14, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

CSS, JS, etc. on User:I,Robot

From User talk:Smurrayinchester

Hey, I'm in the middle of creating a bot and designing its userpage. To keep with the theme, I'd like to change around the heading CSS and possibly add a form box to my talk page, so that comments get added in a unique way. Are either of these possible? - ElAmericano (dímelo) 19:05, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

So, what you need is a way for comments about I,Robot to be directed to you, without conflicting with other messages? Is that what you mean? smurrayinchester(User), (Talk) 20:01, 17 March 2006 (UTC)
The problem I'm having is that—because my talk bg is semi-transparent black—I can't see any headings (h2, h3, etc.). Also, I'd like to get rid of the line below them and make the font about equal with the text font. As to the form box, what I had in mind is that the user enters his comment there (like he was "cat"ting or appending his message to the terminal), and it appears on the comment page, maybe even without a subject. Is this at all possible? - ElAmericano (dímelo) 20:05, 17 March 2006 (UTC)
Well, I've come with the best that's possible with the current help:Inputbox codes; click 'INPUT' and then type what you need. It is not perfect, but it's a start. smurrayinchester(User), (Talk) 20:57, 17 March 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the help. - ElAmericano (dímelo) 21:03, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

Deletion of your image

From User talk:Mo0

As discussed on my talkpage before, the image you deleted was perfectly legal for me to use. It was a simple screenshot of a word on my computer, not even any software. Please restore it ASAP. - ElAmericano (dímelo) 15:30, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

I deleted your image as part of a massive list of images that had been tagged as fair use, had not had their image description edited within the past 7 days, and were not being used in any articles. Fair use images, as have been mentioned earlier on your user page, are only validly used in actual articles, not in the userspace. I'd hate to put it this way, but when I was deleting images last night I was not using discrimination at all. An automated page (located here) put all of the images that qualified for speedy deletion, since an orphaned fair use image that has not had its status updated in 7 days is a valid speedy deletion.
It also looks like you've gone ahead and restored the image anyway, as that massive header on my talk page indicated. Just so you know, image deletions are permanent; there would've been no way for me to restore the exact image that you uploaded. You may want to take some of the advice people have listed here and get a free font that can validly be used here, and use that as your header instead.
Hope this helps! :) Mo0[talk] 20:06, 17 March 2006 (UTC)
Sorry about the header. I forgot to put [[:Image... etc.]]. As to the image, I think I'm the one who accidentally qualified it as "fair-use" because I saw the word screenshot and decided to use it. Now, I've tagged it as it should have been - an image I created. (The font is a free one.) Thanks for the explanation, though. I was really frustrated. - ElAmericano (dímelo) 20:10, 17 March 2006 (UTC)
Ah, gotcha. I can completely sympathize with you there; the image tagging stuff has always been far beyond my capacity to understand. ;P Glad I could clear that up for you. :) 20:16, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

I have taken some (intelligent, reliable but non-legally qualified) advice on this. My understanding is that the main point is that you can (obviously) copyright a piece of computer software, including the font files but you cannot copyright either the typeface itself (in the US anyway), nor the output of that copyrighted software, since you didn't actually produce the output: the operator did. Intutively, fonts are made for use and so using them is going to be fine and not rest on fair use. There is a theoretical possibly that a particular license for a font might try to take away the right to use it freely, but then it wouldn't be much of a font and so that isn't terribly likely. Equally, the person producing the output using that font can only copyright that output if it actually contains some originality. Simply saying "ElAmericano" doens't require any creativity and so you probably can't assert your copyright over that image. Which is fine, since you have released it into the public domain.

As for which tag to use, well the one you have is fine. You should only apply a fair use tag if you are uploading an image that you do not own the copyright to (usually this means any image that you did not create) and you think the use of the image is likely to qualify as fair. If you are uploading an image you own the copyright to, then you must use one of the free licenses such as the GFDL (tag with {{GFDL-self}} ) or or one of the Creative Commons licenses (e.g. {{cc-by-sa-2.5}} ) or simply into the public domain as you have in this case. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list. -Splashtalk 22:32, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

Oh Almighty Page-layout God...

Hello Oh Divine Wonder of Page-Design. I ask from you but one small miracle... Inspired by your user page layout, I've reworked the design of the Community Portal. But it's just not quite there yet. Would you be so kind as to apply your magical touch to that page's menu? --Go for it! 13:54, 18 March 2006 (UTC)

P.S.: I found your further questions at User:ElAmericano/questions, and couldn't resist.

I'll do what I can (I'm working on it here.) but will be on dialup for the next week. What are the stipulations on the menu? Do the icons have to be a certain size? Does it require certain pictures/logos (for example, the featured content logo)? - ElAmericano (dímelo) 16:42, 18 March 2006 (UTC)

I thought what I started with was pretty good: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Community_Portal/Menu&oldid=44339546
Then User:Heretohelp changed it to this: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Community_Portal/Menu&oldid=44347745
and I modified it to this: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Community_Portal/Menu&oldid=44351432
and he came back with this: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Community_Portal/Menu&direction=next&oldid=44351813
then somebody came along and axed it to this: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Community_Portal/Menu&oldid=44374382
which probably means people are going to have a problem with this icon:

What I'm hoping you will do is transcend anything we can do, and come up with something so cool that it's next to impossible to improve upon, that most everybody will love and protect. Some people are attached to the featured star, so I guess you need to take that into account in making your best judgement. The Community Portal is one of the most visited pages on Wikipedia, so give it the best you've got! Make me proud. --Go for it! 18:26, 18 March 2006 (UTC)

Request for assistance

I'm in the midst of trying to get the Community Portal restored. I was working on it, and someone reverted it to a version that existed months ago, and then an admin came along and protected it. So I've called for a vote, which has 3 drafts to choose from (the version before the reversion, the version after the reversion, and another draft some others have been working on). A major theme that keeps coming up in voters' comments is that even though they support the design that was on the Community Portal (draft1a), they'd like a different color scheme.

I don't have a clue when it comes to coordinating colors. I am hoping that you could help in this regard. So here is my request: please make a copy of draft1a as a subpage of your user page. Adjust the colors, and when you are done, let me know and I'll put a link to it as a color alternative in draft1a's voting section heading. Since only the colors will be changed, it will be the same draft, but will allow the voters to specify in their comments which color scheme they like best applied to that draft. --Go for it! 04:03, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

P.S.: if you notice any similarities between draft1a and your user page, that's because I based it on your design! --Go for it! 04:09, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

Slight change in plans -- the Community Portal has been restored, and I'm organizing a color poll so that the community can decide on what color combo to have displayed on the Community Portal. So instead of placing a link on the reversion poll as I requested above (that poll has been archived), please contact me, and I'll include your draft in the poll. I've placed a notice on the Community Bulletin Board asking for users (hopefully adept at color coordination) to contact me if they would like to present a color combo draft for consideration. I'm also asking that no one change the content of the drafts, because that will make the poll ambiguous. Note that your draft will need it's own menu subpage, to avoid conflict with the Community Portal and the other drafts. Please let me know if I can count on your participation. --Go for it! 18:39, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

Shortcuts

From User talk:Werdna648

Please delete all your personal shortcut pages. Shortcuts are only for public pages in the Wikipedia namespace. - ElAmericano (dímelo) 13:16, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

If you would prefer that I move my .NET Bot Framework page into project-space, I can do that. However, this shortcut is useful for some needing to quickly access the page on my .NET Bot Framework. Thanks, Werdna648T/C\@ 17:27, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
