Lomepal, stage name of Antoine Valentinelli (born 4 December 1991), is a French rapper from the 13th arrondissement of Paris. He wrote five EPs before his solo album, FLIP, released in June 2017 and a platinum record.

His stage name, Lomepal (from the French L'homme pâle, "the pale man"), comes from the fact his friends thought he was always ill due to his pale complexion. He also chose this nickname to symbolise that white performers have had trouble finding their place in the world of rap. His first stage name was Jo Pump.

In 2017, he had already performed a hundred gigs and his YouTube channel had reached 80 million views.

Biography[edit]

Lomepal is the son of Dominique Valentinelli, reader and proofreader for the publishing company Gallimard, and his mother is a painter. He grew up in a background that was artistic and unstable. His mother's income was erratic: "We lived a bohemian middle-class lifestyle in a studio where a lot of exhibitions took place. Sometimes paintings were selling like hot cakes and sometimes it was financially harder."[1] His father left the family when he was young; Antoine then grew up without him but with his two sisters and his mother. He felt the effects of this absence throughout secondary school: "Home was a war zone, my father had cleared off, my mother was in hospital, I wasn't in the mood for school."[2] He nevertheless obtained the baccalaureate as an independent candidate. After graduating from secondary school he began cinema studies but dropped out to dedicate himself to rap music.

Genesis[edit]

Close to the French collective L'entourage, Antoine became a rapper thanks to skateboarding, his first passion (the reason why "I've already broken every bone five times" he says, "It's as simple as that: I don't remember not skating one day for the past ten years".) His first solo album is the result of his two passions. A flip is a classic skateboarding figure: "Before, I didn't want to sing about skateboarding because I wanted to do it right. I've been waiting for the right moment and this moment has come now."[3] Playing with the diverse meanings of the word "flip" in French, the artist appears dressed as a woman on the sleeve.

He also admits having an immodarate liking for travel. He has visited Canada, Australia, Indonesia, Greece, Portugal, Morocco, the United States and Italy (where he records his songs).

In 2011, he released his first album, 20 mesures. A second followed in 2013, Le singe fume sa cigarette, with the composer Hologram Lo and the Belgian rapper Caballero, and another EP named Cette foutue perle. The EP Seigneur came out in 2014 followed by Majesté one year later. ODSL co-produced with S-Two was released in 2016.

Flip (2017)[edit]

On 30 June 2017, Lomepal released his first studio solo album, FLIP. The sleeve shows the artist dressed as a woman, which is very unusual in the macho world of hip-hop. The album gained attention through the hit "Yeux disent" and was certified platinum in February 2018.
