School shooting plot[edit]

In 2008, a 16-year-old Penn High School student was accused of plotting to attack the school, similar to the Columbine High School massacre. The student conspired with 33-year-old Lee Billi on the attack that included the school and one other location not disclosed by authorities. A judge placed the student in juvinile detention indefinitely. Just before trial, Billi agreed to plead guilty to "inciting violence," and the conspiracy to commit murder charge was dropped.[24]

Resource Officer Firing[edit]

The School has recently faced a controversy about the firing of Corporal Dave Sult, who was the same resource officer that uncovered a school shooting plot, in the 2007-2008 school year. Just days before his release, Corporal Sult was asked to make recommendations about how to make Penn High School safer. Eventually, the school dismissed Officer Sult. The school has refused to release an official statement as to why he was released.[25] Reasons for his firing unknown, rumors circulated that the school did not like his recommendation, or that he caught a high-profile student in some sort of activity and was pressured by the administration to cover it up. Both accounts have proven to be false.

Student Walkout[edit]

On March 10, 2009, roughly 800 students walked out of the school at 11 o'clock in protest of the way the firing of Resource Officer Sult was handled by the Penn-Harris-Madison Corporation. The students stood for about four hours and twenty minutes outside the school building. Most kids took this opportunity to voice their opinion on both the firing of Officer Sult and leaving the student body in the the dark about the firing.[26] Shortly after, the school enforced a rule that former Officer Sult had recommended. The corporation has said the decision had nothing to do with the walkout.

Controversial Michiana Zoo Incident[edit]

On the day of May 11, 2009, Penn science classes consisting of sophomores to seniors, ranging from 50-60 students, were to spend the afternoon and Binder Park Zoo, in Battle Creek, MI, to study and observe their enclosed animals. Their trip was cut short due to a group of juvenile students "egging" on a student to climb over two steep fences which one that was intended to be electric into an animal enclosed of ostriches to only retrieve one of the "empty" ostrich eggs[27] that were rumored to be "full". This made the whole staff of the park search for the teen. The student, after found in the zoo gift shop, was told that he was seen by surveilance and was to be charged if the egg was not found after mentioning that it was thrown away by another student whom is still unidentified. After consequences was said the student returned to the buses back to Penn and soon went missing for several days unknown of his whereabouts making him wanted on the national authorites database. His strategy of survival is unknown but yet returned in perfect health. Michiana parents were upset after reading and seeing the news of this story in his absence thinking that Penn was trying to keep the incident a "secret" by not hearing that this student was punished and saying so in news comments of similar behavior news stories.[28]
