A very brief essay regarding guestbooks[edit]

There are multiple points of view regarding guestbooks. One side of the debate feels that the use of guestbooks goes against the intent of policies such as WP:NOTSOCIALNETWORK. I respectfully disagree. Wikipedia is all about collaboration. Users don't own the articles they write: Users write articles and post them where others then comment and edit them further (and sometimes delete them as well) in a collaborative effort that may be unlike any in previous history. It is helpful to successful collaboration to understand not only the purpose of a particular article, but also the interests and experiences of those with whom one is collaborating. Additionally, guestbook signatures let editors know who is taking an interest in their own work or activities, and effectively invite said editors to review the interests and history of those who signed said guestbooks. As long as this is done with the intent of furthering the aims of Wikipedia, and not simply as a way of collecting "friends" for purposes other than encyclopedia building, I feel that it does not violate the letter or spirit of the aforementioned policy.

Feel free to comment or discuss guestbooks below. (Comments about topics other than guestbooks belong on my talk page.)  Etamni
