K League Junior (Hangul: K리그 주니어) is a men's youth football league of the South Korean football league system. The league is contested by twenty-five teams corresponding to the professional clubs that participate in the K League, the top two tiers of club football in South Korea. K League Junior operates in separate age groups. The U18 league was founded in 2008; the U15 league was added in 2019[1]. A U17 league was started in 2017 and a U14 league in 2019.
All K League Junior teams also play in the K League Youth Championship, a summer tournament akin to a youth League Cup. Currently, the top 8 teams (U15 and U18) also play in their respective age groups in the National School Football League, which is akin to a youth FA Cup involving the best youth teams nationwide.
Professional clubs in the K League are required to operate both U15 and U18 clubs as a condition for their participation.
Structure[edit]
For the U18 league, in the 2008–2011, 2013, and 2014 seasons, all teams played a double round robin and there was a single winner crowned. For the 2012 season, the league was split into two regional groups, Group A and Group B. The groups were independent, and so two winners were crowned, one for each group. From the 2015 season, the regional groups returned, and the season was also split into a spring season and a fall season, similar to the Apertura and Clausura system. Each year therefore produced four champions.
Under the current system that began in 2019, the spring season operates with regional groups (Group A and Group B). However, after a single round robin, the top teams from each group are selected to participate in a championship group (Group A) for the fall season in another single round robin. The remaining teams play in another group, Group B. Although two champions are declared for the spring season, the winner of Group A in the fall season is considered the overall champion of the year.
The U15 league operates under separate regional groups (Group A and Group B) in a full-year season, palying a double round robin. There are therefore two champions crowned each year.
Participating teams[edit]
Professional K League teams may be associated with a particular school, or they may operate independent youth teams.
