The Italian general election, 2018 were held on Sunday 4 March 2018.

The 630 seats of the Chamber of Deputies of the Republic were assigned with a parallel voting system: 232 were assigned with a first-past-the-post system, 386 with a proportional representation system and 12 by the Italians living abroad.[1]

Electoral system[edit]

Map of all the 232 constituencifes, with the winner higlighted in colour.

The election was regulated by a new electoral law, proposed by the Democratic Party and approved in October 2017 with two votes of confidence to the cabinet, called Rosatellum, after its writer Ettore Rosato.

The national elections use a parallel voting system, with 37% of seats allocated using a first-past-the-post electoral system and 63% using a proportional method (the latter including the seats allocated to Italians abroad), with one round of voting.

The Chamber of Deputies has 630 members, of whom

  • 232 are directly elected in single-member constituencies.
  • 386 are elected by national proportional representation.
  • 12 are elected by the Italians abroad.

The Chamber of Deputies is elected on a single ballot.

The law re-introduced a closed list system for the party lists on the second ballot, i.e., excluding voters from the decision as to which members of that party would enter parliament, thereby guaranteeing reelection of party leaders whose popular support was rapidly declining (new elections were to be held once the new electoral law was fully implemented).
