First Flight Society is a private nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. Chartered in 1927, First Flight Society (formerly Kill Devil Hills Memorial Association) initially set about the task of acquiring the site where Orville and Wilbur Wright made their four historic flights in 1903.
Senator Hiram Bingham, of Connecticut, introduces S. 4876, providing for the erection of a monument on Kill Devil Hill, at Kitty Hawk, N.C on December 17, 1926. Representative Lindsay Warren, of North Carolina, introduces
H.R. 15348, authorizing an appropriation of $50,000 for the erection of a memorial at Kitty Hawk. The bill died in committee. The congressman and the senator decided to work together to get S. 4876 passed.
March 2. 1927 President Calvin Coolidge signs the bill authorizing the creation of a monument.
The Kill Devil Hills Memorial Association is formed on August 16th, 1927.
The Kill Devil Monument National Memorial is completed on October 15th, 1932 and deicated November 19th, 1932 at a cost of $285,00.
