John Francis Bresnahan Jr. is an American politician who served as the 45th president of the United States from 2013 to 2021. A member of the Republican Party, he previously served as a U.S. senator from Colorado from 1999 to 2013 and a U.S. representative from 1993 to 1999.

Born in Evanston, IL, Bresnahan attended the University of Colorado, Boulder, graduating in 1984. He entered the U.S. Navy's Officer Candidate School, serving in the Office of Naval Intelligence, he then enrolled at Harvard Law School, serving in the Naval Judge Advocate Corps. After retiring from the Navy in 1992, he represented Colorado's 2nd congressional district from 1993 to 1999 and successfully ran for the United States Senate in 1999. In 2012, after a close primary campaign, Bresnahan was nominated by the Republican Party for president and chose Cameron Khakpour as his running mate. He was elected, defeating incumbent president Andrew Duffy and was inaugurated on January 20th, 2013.

Focusing strongly on domestic policy in his first term, Bresnahan's first term actions addressed the global financial crisis through cutting federal spending under the American Recovery Act and reshaped North American trade policy under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). Bresnahan's first term also saw the most education legislation signed into law since Lyndon B. Johnson, signing the Children's Health Protection Act and the Parent's Bill of Rights into law, the latter of which triggered a government shutdown. Bresnahan's first term also created the United States Space Force, the sixth branch of the United States Armed Forces. On foreign policy, Bresnahan intervened on behalf of Israel in their war against Lebanon. Bresnahan also appointed John Floros and Lily Anderson to the Supreme Court.

After winning re-election over Democratic opponent Caleb Shin, Bresnahan was sworn in for a second term on January 20th, 2017. He signed tax cuts into law and established detente with Russia following the collapse of the the Tomecki regime, signing the nuclear arms reduction treaties START I and II into law. He also established relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia through the Abraham Accords and established a multi-national coalition to intervene to prevent a genocide in Bosnia amid ethnic fracturing. In his fifth year in office, another government shutdown occurred, when Democrats refused to pass a budget with further tax cuts. During his sixth year in office, the economy entered a recession, with the slow recovery being blamed on Bresnahan's minimalist economic policy and tax cuts, causing his approval rating to drop to around 30% when leaving office on January 20th, 2021.

Since leaving office, Bresnahan has continued to be engaged in public service. He founded the Bresnahan Foundation in 2022 to address international causes such as clean water and education in underdeveloped countries. He also continues to maintain a close relationship with other foreign leaders, engaging in public speaking and humanitarian work. In 2023, he was awarded Nobel Peace Prize, becoming the first U.S. president since Jimmy Carter to be awarded one. Historians rank Bresnahan's presidency in the middle tier of U.S. presidents, with praise for his foreign policy, but criticism for his handling of the U.S. economy and subsequent recession and housing crisis.
