From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Universities of Oxford and Cambridge are two collegiate universities in the United Kingdom. Due to this collegiate system, the historic nature of the universities and colleges, and the separation of teaching between university department and colleges, the academic ranks of these two universities are different to other universities in the UK.

College academic ranks[edit]

Fellows[edit]

  • Fellow - The basic academic rank of the Oxbridge colleges is the Fellow. These Fellows are elected and make up the governing body of the college.
  • Professorial Fellow -
  • Emeritus Fellow - At Oxford, retired Fellows can be made Emeritus Fellows. As such, they are no longer part of the governing body but retain an active link with the college.
  • Honorary Fellow - This a is honorary title that can be awarded to distinguished former members of the college, those who otherwise have links with the college, or exceptional individuals who the college wishes to honour. They are not members of the governing body.
  • Senior Research Fellow - At All Souls College, Oxford, Senior Research Fellows are Fellows of the college who specialise in research rather than teaching: the appointment is equivalent to Professorial Fellows and professor.[1] At Cambridge, Senior Research Fellows are college Fellows who specialise in research: their pay is equivalent to that of a university professor.[2]
  • Junior Research Fellow - An early career appointment, usually held by a post-doctoral academic. This is a fixed-term appointment; usually for three or four years.
