Article sections[edit]

There are no strict rules as yet, so follow the guidelines that are usually used in other gastropod articles: Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Gastropods/Archive 3#Universal sections. Also see Wikipedia:WikiProject Animals/Article template and Wikipedia:WikiProject_Birds#Article sections.

Names and titles[edit]

There are some obvious conventions, according to the Wikipedia:Naming conventions (fauna). See also for example Wikipedia:WikiProject_Birds#Names_and_titles.

Homonyms in titles[edit]

A homonym is a word that has the same spelling and same pronunciation as another word that has a totally different meaning. This is a situation that is fairly commonly encountered, especially among the thousands of words that are used as genus names of snails and slugs. Some genus names are identical to words that have a very different meaning, such as names of characters in Greek mythology.

Some other gastropod genus names are identical to a genus names that are used for plants or fungi or other organisms. Thus it is always worth checking by seeing what a snail genus name links to once it appears as a blue link; it may turn out to link to something completely unrelated to snails!

In those cases, here is what we do: we disambiguate the gastropod name in the title of the snail or slug article by using the word (gastropod) after the name. Do not use (genus) or (mollusc) as a way to disambiguate the name.

Examples:

Do not use (gastropod) after a genus name if no article exists about a homonym. In that case the genus name does not need to be disambiguated

Stub types[edit]

Currently, Feb 2010, we have too many stub types. We wish to keep the first two types and the family stub types, but we will eliminate the stubs for the intermediate higher taxa (such as Sorbeoconcha, Heterobranchia, etc) because those taxa are often changed as new taxonomies are published.
