IT 104 class Topic: Autonomous Driving Spring Semester 2020 George Mason University

Current Use:

Things that we have to consider when making the program or software for cars to start driving on their own. This includes acceleration rates, sensors, and determining what is the safe speed for auto pilot. Softwares for cars would also include the ability so sense its surroundings, perception, which also provides localization, object detection, and object tracking. Overall the two most important program that it would need to be assigned to would be making safety a priority and doing decision-making tasks, where in many situations could happen unexpectedly. Right now, other companies, such as Tesla, made its own supercomputer for the vehicle, trying to achieve the use of data to adapt and sensory to the surroundings around it.

Security Aspects:

  • GPS systems
  • Obstacle avoidance
  • Sensory technologies
  • Stronger encryption code

The factors that were made above were several of the most important aspects that we need to take into account when creating the security aspects of the car. While yes, there's more to be discovered when making autonomous driving possible, with new outcomes, comes new challenges that arise. "How often can it detect its surroundings? Will the software wear out or be hacked? How will it make its instant decisions when facing a difficult situation?"

Ethical and Social Implications:

However advanced the software or programming might be, there are still some lingering questions. For example, who's safety is a priority first, the passenger(s) or the pedestrians? There are still many factors not all the programming will always be 100% secure and safe. Sometimes, autonomous driving won't be able to recognize who or what will be at risk or at other times, the software won't be able to respond on time or at all. However, the main goal will remain the same: enhancing the security of road transportation and improvement in the telecommunication industry.

Future Use:

As always, researches are constantly exploring new ways of autonomous driving, specifically towards the extended population. Scientists are constantly finding new and programmable ways to install basic tasks on the road, similar to how a human would drive a car. Such as, sensing, radar and sonar, perception, object tracking and detection, decision-making, prediction, and path planning. We are constantly facing those obstacles that are not only on the road but the distraction in the car and restraint and rest that a person would need. There are many different ways to program softwares that makes it fast, efficient, safe and affordable to all of the population.
