Darlene Yee-Melichar is a Professor of Gerontology based in California who focuses in educational gerontology [1] and minority women's health [2].She was recently appointed to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and Advisory Panel on Outreach and Education [3] . Dr. Yee-Melichar is also an author of multiple textbooks and the coordinator of the Gerontology Master’s program at San Francisco State University [4].

Early Career[edit]

Dr. Yee-Melichar graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences from Barnard College of Columbia University [10]. She then completed her Master’s education in Gerontology Administration from College of New Rochelle in addition to a second degree in Health Education from Teachers College of Columbia University. She also obtained an Ed.D. in Health Education with Post-Doctoral Training in Computer Management Systems from Teachers College. Dr. Yee-Melichar concluded her academic education as a Certified Health Education Specialist [11].

Scholarship[edit]

Dr. Yee-Melichar is acknowledged in educational gerontology and minority women’s health[12]. Her scholarship focuses on these two areas with research publications on Asian Americans and women’s health in addition to successful aging in society[13]. Dr. Yee-Melichar has also presented for Region IX Women’s Health Advisory Council Meeting and Gerontological Society of America. She also published in multiple journals such as The Gerontologist [14] and Association for Gerontology in Higher Education. Her textbooks include information on the practicality of gerontology with books such as Aging in Contemporary Society: Translating Research into Practice[15], Long-Term Care Administration and Management [16] and Assisted Living Administration and Management [17].

Gerontology Educator[edit]

Darlene Yee-Melichar has taught at multiple institutions; she was an associate professor at York College, CUNY and University of Texas Medical Branch. She has been a professor of Gerontology at SF State for the past 26 years. She served as one of the inaugural Interim Directors of the Ed.D. Program in Educational Leadership, and serves as a faculty leader on both the campus and statewide academic senate executive committees[18]. She has received many awards for her teaching excellence and service contributions to the campus, community and profession.

Advocacy in Gerontology[edit]

Dr. Yee-Melichar is a Charter Fellow of the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education[19]; Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America; Fellow of AAHPERD's Research Consortium; and a Full Member of Sigma Xi , the national research society. She is also appointed as Chair of the Program Committee for the 2015 Annual Scientific Conference for the Gerontological Society of America [20]. The multiple scholarships directed by Dr. Yee-Melichar revolves around the betterment of eldercare throughout the Bay Area and supports the development of individuals within long-term care administration. Some of these scholarships include: Monarch Village Scholarship Fund, Michelle Benjamin Scholarship Fund[21], Patrick Nobis RCFE Endowed Scholarship [22] and Frank P. Broz Memorial Fund.

Dr. Darlene Yee-Melichar is also an advocate for students as she joined in signing a letter to NCLB in order to stop test-focused reforms: As Congress revises and reauthorizes the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, we strongly urge departing from test-focused reforms that not only have been discredited for high-stakes decisions, but also have shown to widen, not close, gaps and inequities. [23]
