Cumstoun House is a country house near Kirkcudbright in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland.
History[edit]
The Cumstoun estate has been a part of the Barony of Twynholm since at least the thirteenth century.[1] A tower house, which survives as the ruined Cumstoun Castle, was first mentioned in a charter written in 1604 or 1605, and was probably built for Sir John Kennedy of Blairquhain in the fifteenth century. [1] Around 1819, the estate was acquired by Adam Maitland; Thomas Hamilton built Cumstoun House in 1828 a short distance to the east of the now-ruined castle.[2] In 1877 alterations were carried out by John Dick Peddie and Charles Kinnear;[3] more significant remodelling and additions were performed by Kinnear and John More Dick Peddie in 1891.[2][3] Further alterations were carried out for the Maitlands by Anthony Curtis Wolffe in 1954–1955.[3]
The house was designated a Category A listed building in 1971.[4] [5] [6]
