Long Time Reader, New Editor[edit]

Hello everyone. This is my first attempts to give back a little to Wikipedia. It is a steep learning curve, not user friendly, and fraught with editor missteps. It would seem necessary to take a course before offering minor edits.

Thanks for any helpful feedback.

Unfortunate Encounter with Detionist Attitude and Aggressive Editing[edit]

I recently encountered a very negative experience with aggressive editing. Simply put, a worthy contribution to a page was removed under the accusation of motives other than helping the Wikipedia community. Just an accusation. It was a terribly disappointing result for my early steps with contributing back to this project. Although I re-read the rules and confirmed the post was acceptable, no opportunity was given to discuss this in a reasonable manner. The following was my response to the editor, who chose to delete it.

New editors are leaving the Wikimedia community. At one time, 40% of new editors would still be active a year later. Recently, this number has dropped to 12% or so. There is no doubt that these people are finding it difficult to meet the impossible standards of the existing community that have had many years of experience, and now hold their experience level as the standard of qualification. A deletionist attitude and obsession with minor rules reinforces the belief that new contributors are not valued. It is terribly frustrating to navigate the maze of Wikipedia rules and user interface, only to be accused of ulterior motives. Especially so, when, after carefully re-reading the rules, the retraction of the contribution did not apply. Wikipedia Editor Trends Study
