John Morton started the band electric eels with Dave E McManus and Brian McMahon in 1972, the final impetus for becoming an actual band being after the three had been to see a Captain Beefheart gig and were unimpressed enough by the support band (Youngstown's Left End) that they decided they could do better themselves.

In 1979, he had a short lived band called X-X. " It could be anybody like, appearing tonite, one-night only, X- Charles Mason and the Family -X" -------- fix exact quote from interview--------

In 1980, he moved to New York with the artist Michelle Zalopsky, his wife at the time.
