Marketing device; an article in the Wikipedia encyclopedia...

A Marketing device is defined as a form of intellectual property rights management product or system which may also serve as an advertisement or a product itself. An example of a marketing device would be a professional designed logo that also may be used in another context, such as an icon or infographic symbol.

Origins and Purpose[edit]

Marketing devices have always been used since the ancient mercantile trade centuries before the birth of Christ. Its sublime nature integrated into the bazaars and trading posts in the form of spices and aromatic fragrances which became synonymous with the markets themselves. This acceptance by association concept was further developed into the cultural attributes that were created by those markets.

Differentiating Branding & Marketing Devices[edit]

The actual usage of a marketing device is within the jurisdiction of corporate law and governance, yet the general thought in industry suggests that branding be differentiated from marketing devices on the pretense of revenue flow and functionality. Branding establishes a company's proprietary existence and identity, while marketing devices create marketplace expansion and acceptance[1]. Strategic marketing campaigns may incorporate both instances to more effectively establish the market penetration and saturation levels needed to sustain a competitive position.

Auditory Properties as a Marketing Device[edit]

The traditional theme music that most contemporary advertisement campaigns use to better associate their products, goods or services are also a form of marketing device. These productions were originally developed to be performed as informational aids (see; Sound branding) during commercials, yet some campaigns have developed into much larger productions; incorporating elements such as simple Jingles and ringtones to car ignitions systems and auricular cueing for other mechanical devices.

Tagging and Other Identifiers Used as Marketing Devices[edit]

Concepts in business and consumer marketing host a myriad of tagging systems, such as the QR code which creates a virtual catalogue of millions of scannable 'tags' which once activated will exhibit to the user detailed information on the target product, good or service. These types of devices help to define IT environments such as exposition centers and trade shows by means of direct marketing to potential supplier/vendor groups.

Another identifier used as a type of marketing device is known as a Ticker symbol; the primary initials used to identify a corporation within the a particular stock exchange. These types of identifiers create a fast short version of the corporation's name which may be more easily located by a potential investor[2].
