Meher Bukhari, born in 1984 is a Pakistani journalist and television talk show host. Residing in Pakistan since birth, she is now one of the most successful journalists in Pakistan. She is well known among peers and followers for being a face on television that has faced some controversies and has tackled some scandals facing popular media channels. Interviewing Political leaders on television, she has had ups and downs in her career as a journalist. She went abroad in pursuit of education and returned to Pakistan and began her career as a journalist.[1]

Career[edit]

Meher Bukhari began her career as a Journalist and a Host on TV programs in SAMAA TV. She faced some issues as things started to get complicated in her career. She was the face on widespread social media content relaying her to scandals and controversies that later on led to widespread virtual viral views. She did not find much success in it and was subsequently fired from the channel. After that, she joined Dunya news and it was here that she found mainstream popularity and started gaining a following among viewers.[2]

She hosted a political program called ‘Crossfire with Meher Bukhari' where she would frequently interview prominent Pakistani politicians and talk on current affairs. But later she got fired from this too and is now working on Dawn News as a television talk show host.[3]

Controversies[edit]

In late 2010, Meher Bukhari aired prominent former Pakistani politician, Salman Taseer’s comments regarding Pakistan’s controversial blasphemy laws. This caused a huge scandal in Pakistan and Salman Taseer was murdered soon after. Much blame was assigned to Meher Bukhari for whipping up public sentiment and fervor, and SAMAA TV subsequently fired her.[4]

Following a terrorist attack on Karachi’s naval base on 16 May 2011, Meher Bukhari, who then hosted Dunya TV's popular show ‘Crossfire’, hosted a panel questioning the Pakistan Army’s role. Appearing on the show, Asma Jehangir, the President of the Supreme Court Bar Association, denounced the Army. In an uninterrupted diatribe, she urged corrupt generals to abandon their flawed policies, return to barracks, and permit Pakistanis to live in peace. This clip quickly went viral, and was shared among Pakistanis all over the web.[5]

In the summer of 2012, Scandal erupted in Pakistan over a prominent Pakistani business tycoon, Malik Riaz and his relations with Pakistan’s political elite. Meher Bukhari and fellow journalist, Mubasher Luqman interviewed Malik Riaz. A video clip of Meher Bukhari and Mubashir Luqman, popular for not holding back during interviews, talking frankly with Malik Riaz when they believed they were off air was leaked to the public. In it there was seen discussing with Mr Riaz what questions they would and would not ask him during the interview. Both Meher Bukhari and Mubasher Luqman accused of dishonest journalism and were fired by Dunya news.[6]

Personal life[edit]

Meher Bukhari is married to Kashif Abbasi, a senior anchor of ARY News Channel. Their wedding was on 19 November 2011. They recently gave birth to a child.
