Background[edit]

The German women's national wheelchair basketball team had won silver at the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing, where they were defeated in the final by the United States. In the run up to the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London, they played the world's top teams in a series of tournaments, winning the Four Nations Tournament in Frankfurt and the BT Paralympic World Cup in Manchester. They went to the United States to play the United States, Canada, the Netherlands and Great Britain in the North American Cup in June 2012, then travelled to the other side of the world to play Australia, China and Japan in Sydney in July.[1][2] "We can beat everybody. We just have to focus on our own performance. In the end, I think we can only beat ourselves." Marina Mohnen told the media.[1]
