The Atlanta Riots or Atlanta Massacre began on Saturday Sept. 22, 1906, and continued for four days. Sparked by unsubstantiated rumours of attacks on white woman by black men, thousands of whites attacked and killed black men. woman and children in the downtown Atlanta area. The offical death count was 12 blacks and two whites killed, but it has been claimed the real death toll was much higher with Atlanta authorities not wanting to further damage the reputation of the city. The riot was reported in newspapers around the world, but has not been commemorated or taught in schools in the United States.
