Purpose[edit]

This template serves as an easy way to produce a emoticon-like image in line with the sentence you are typing, without having to look up the link name for each image you need and play with the width to prevent it from becoming gigantic. When used properly, the template will produce a single, 25-pixel wide image that should fit in line with your text as such:

Known problems[edit]

  • If used in the middle of a sentence, there must not be a space between the template and the word immediately after it.
    • The above problem does not occur when the sentence is part of a blockquote using the <blockquote> tags.
  • This template will cause a line break in any sentence or paragraph that uses indenting with commas, asterisks, or number signs. ( : , * , # )
  • The template MUST be substituted. Failure to do so will display the entire template code rather than the desired image.

Usage[edit]

This template MUST be substituted by adding "subst:" to the beginning of the template code.

This template implements a "switch" parser function to determine which particular emoticon you wish to use from a series of choices, shown below. Any code not recognized by the template will result in a simple smiley face () regardless of your intentions; however, the text parameters are not case sensitive (Smile = smile). All images used are available on the Wikimedia Commons.

Format: {{subst:User:Hersfold/Emoticon|code}}
