Roy Whitbread Beard' New article name goes here' was born in Cardiff in 1909 and public school educated, eventually qualifying as an architect at Liverpool University. He established a architect's practice at Shrewsbury. This professional background came in very useful while he was active as a rock climber. He had joined the Climbers Club and assisted in the establishing of new climbs as second to J Menlove Edwards (qv), one of the established pioneer climbers of the day. He assisted in the re-conditioning of Cwm Glas Cottage, an old farmhouse in the Llanberis Pass, which was used by members of the club for overnight accommodation. Soon he helped in the building construction of the Club's hut, Ynys Ettws, a little further up the Llanberis valley, and became its first custodian (1950 - 1959).new article content. The second world war curtailed his climbing activities but he continued his interest to his death in 1978....
