Founder Myra Davis Hemmings[edit]

Founder Myra Davis Hemmings died in 1978. She served as President of both Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, alpha Chapter on the Howard University campus.


The official Certificate of Incorporation bears her signature as President along with the signatures of seven other officers who were also called the directors.

Soror Hemmings earned a Master of Arts degree in Speech from Northwestern University (IL). She became active in the NAACP and the National Council of Negro Women, and chartered the San Antonio (TX) Alumnae Chapter. She also served as Co-Chairman of the 19th National Convention in San Antonio. In 1963, she co-chaired Delta’s Golden Anniversary Celebration, which was address by President John F. Kennedy. Delta Sigma Theta was the only Black women’s organization President Kennedy ever addressed. Soror Hemmings served Delta as Grand Vice President.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. created the Myra Davis Hemmings Scholarship in memory of Soror Hemmings is awarded for the study in the performing or creative arts.
