I'm aiming to contribute to the UK Waterways Project. I'm not really au fait with Wikipedia though, so I'll be learning as I go along...

I've worked on the articles: Montgomery Canal; Ellesmere Canal; Llangollen Canal. It's my personal mission to get them 'A' rated articles at Wikipedia:WikiProject_UK_Waterways/Assessment.

Creating Waterways Routemaps[edit]

My beginners guide to creating routemaps for canals.

1. Open Template:Waterways_legend in a new window - you'll use this for reference.
2. Work in a sandbox on your userpage initially.
3. Pick a default name for your map, then add the following 3 lines:

{| {{Railway line header}}
{{UKrail-header||{{{1|default name}}}|#0099FF}}
{{BS-table-canal}}

These lines create the table, with the correct legend link and a blue header, and allow you to set the title of the routemap when you call it from a template (more on that later), or if the name is not specified, the default name will be shown.

4. Add a line for the first feature, of the form:

{{BS|''feature''|''Bridge number''|''Label''}}

To find the feature code, hover over the icon you want to use in the legend, check the URL. It will be of the form http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:BSicon_xxxx.svg. The xxxx is the feature code, between the underscore and the .svg. The number of characters varies.

If the feature is not a bridge, leave the bridge number blank.

5. Repeat step 4 for each feature.
6. Add the following 2 lines:

|}
|}

7. When you are happy with your routemap, copy the code and go to Category:Waterway_routemap_templates
8. Create a new article with a name of the same syntax as the existing templates.
9. Paste the code to your new article, and add a new line with the text:

<noinclude>{{UK-waterway-routemap}}</noinclude>

10. On the pages where you wish to use your template, enter the code:

{{''Name of template''|''Title''}}

The name of the template is as you specified in step 8. This method allows you to use the same template in more than one place with different titles.

If you find a need for an icon which doesn't exist, you can create it yourself or request it at Template talk:Waterways legend
