humanutopia is an education and training social enterprise based in the United Kingdom. [1] They create and run inspirational courses in schools for students and teachers. They have a number of different partnerships with schools, from 1 day workshops to long term collaborations.[2]

History[edit]

In 2001, two P.E. teachers, Graham Moore and Carlo Missirian came together through Reach For The Sky - BSkyB's corporate social responsibility project. They soon realised that they wished to continue to expand their teaching and engagement methods with wider groups of young people, so in 2004 gave up their teaching jobs to begin humanutopia.[3] Since then, humanutopia has worked with over 100,000 young people, 20,000 adults and in 500 schools. [4] Building on their aims, they currently employ former participants of their courses to deliver the programmes[5]

humanutopia has also run and been involved with a number of notable conferences. Their conference partners have included: Business in the Community [6], SSAT [7], Teesside University, Young Advisors, Teaching Leaders, and Teach First.

Impact[edit]

humanutopia courses provide a safe environment for students to express themselves, which develops trust to discuss areas such as bullying and behaviour. In doing so, young people gain a sense of confidence, happiness and self belief as they become pro-social role models, called "heroes" to younger students. [8]

Feedback is generally very positive. For example, in one school where they spent £7 per student for nine hours of work, their work impacted positively on nine areas, including improved behaviour, relationships with students and their peers, and desire to improve grades. [9]
