Part of the 2023 Pacific hurricane season

Hurricane Calvin was a powerful tropical cyclone that affect Hawaii during the 2023 Pacific hurricane season. The third named storm, third hurricane, first major hurricane. Calvin originated from an area of low pressure that formed off the coast of Southern Mexico on July 17. Within a favorable environment with low wind shear and warm sea surface temperature, the system steadily intensified over the following days. It reached an initial peak as a Category 3 hurricane on August 18. Calvin peaked with winds of 110 mph (175 km/h) and a barometric pressure of 955 mbar (hPa; 27.34 inHg). Thereafter, the storm crossed the 140th meridian on July 17, thus entering the central Pacific basin; its sustained winds at the time were nearly 50 mph (85 km/h). Weakened by the close encounter with the land, the storm began losing its tropical characteristics.
