The aim of this work can be fractioned in two main accomplishments. Firstly, developing a common scheme to identify user roles in user innovation communities. This means being able to identify what will define the behavior of these users with variables such as their personality factors, extrinsic and intrinsic motivations or defined role, for example. By reaching this initial goal, the clustering of user behavior at a later stage will be organized and simplified following one scheme.

The following aim is to identify the defined antecedents in user role behavior as portrayed by users themselves in the described scheme. By doing this, prevailing role behaviors may be able to be delineated, meaning that they will not be idiosyncratic, but rather a common definition that will remain consistent and comparable to different innovation communities’ contexts. In order to do so, users in innovation communities will be interviewed.

After much consideration and taking existing research into account, it was decided that the Wikipedia community would be our target investigation group. As for interest myself, the aviation project was selected amongst all existing projects.
