Monarchy MMA is a martial arts & fitness gym located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Monarchy MMA offer classes such as Mixed Martial Arts, Boxing, Muay Thai, No Gi Grappling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Abs Circuit, Meltdown, Yoga, Krav Maga, Female Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Kids Class. The gym built and bred notorious Mixed Martial Arts fighters like Peter Davis, Kenny Yap, Casey Suire, Samir Mrabet and even Agilan Thani.

The History[edit]

The gym was founded by Samir Noury Mrabet, a Belgian citizen which was born in the USA from French-Algerian parents. He came to Malaysia for the first time in 2010 to work at the embassy of Belgium. He didn't feel accomplished working there but he fell in love with Malaysia. Its multi-cultural & multi-religion aspect, while in Europe he have always been discriminated for being a north-african muslim descent. So, instead of making a good living doing something he disliked, he chose to make an unstable living seeking to do something he love doing full-time: teaching & practicing martial arts.

So, in 2011, without knowing what would be the output of this chosen path in the long run, he started teaching in a modest gym in Ampang Point. The class got attention, and students started coming. The fee was a monthly fee, and was divided 50% for him, 50% for the owner of the gym. He was in this situation of going to another gym because as simple as it is: He didn't have any initial fundings, but he loved what he was doing.

During that same year, he lived in room with no windows with humidity problems in Downtown Condominium just behind Wisma MPL. He then moved in Angkasa Impian 1, and he found out the old kindergarten on the Mezzanine floor was vacant, he asked to the management of the building for permission to rent it, and it was accepted, and just for 1K per month. he was doing some modelling work on the side, which he saved 15k RM to start (pay deposit,, rentals & mats). This is how Monarchy MMA Gym started in January 2012. Though he only could afford the mats. Only when he had students could he afford to place punching bags, gloves, kicking pads, etc… and hiring other instructors by the hour to teach other classes.

He then started becoming familiar with accounting, marketing, customer service, etc… He just turned 27 & he had no previous experience in owning a business.

From that point Monarchy grew, and after one year; and partnering up with a major investor, we were able to move our activity to a proper commercial unit in one of the most prominent district in Kuala Lumpur. The higher rental fee, more instructors, longer classes schedule,… etc was of course a risk and a challenge, especially for a start-up. It took what it took, a lot of sacrifices and sweat. But we grew, and started heading towards the stability trend which we are very close to reach now.

Our brand grew, as we built and bred notorious Mixed Martial Arts fighters like Peter Davis, Kenny Yap, Casey Suire, Samir Mrabet and even Agilan Thani.[1]

Uprising Young Fighter Coming From The Gym[edit]

Agilan came in in 2012 at the old kindergarten gym at 17 years old 150 kg overweight high school drop out, never knew his mother and was raised by an unstable single father; He needed a job and a way to train for free. At the beginning, we offered him a part time cleaning job for 900 RM/month, and after few months, made it clear that he needed to sleep at the gym since the situation at home was unstable.

He took it seriously, it was his only way out, and trained day in and out under me and other instructors at the gym. Agilan lost 70 kg in less that a year, started competing, won all of his fights, now he is in the finals of 32 men tournament Malaysian Invasion Mixed Martial Arts Season 2 (MIMMA 2) at Welterweight (77 kg) at Stadium Negara this up-coming 25th of October, and, after 22 months, moved in his own apartment, has been released of all of his cleaning duties, and is now is a full time instructor at Monarchy MMA Gym, earning closely to 3000 RM a month. Agilan has never been out of the country if it wasn’t for Monarchy sending him to Singapore for a training certification class (Crossfit certification). Agilan has never stepped in a plane until September 20th when he travelled for the first time to Thailand as a reward of being the winner of the MIMMA 2 contender spot. If he wins the MIMMA welterweight title, my partner Mike Rodgers, and myself, being both US citizens, will try our best to send him to the USA under an athlete visa in order for him to pursue a professional career in the highest MMA organisation such as the UFC, Bellator, WSOF or ever One FC.
