Early and personal life[edit]

Mopty was born on the 29th of October 1917 in Harnes to Catherine Dedourges and miner Anatole-François Wantiez.[1] Her biological father was Émile Beudot.[1]

She married Adrien Mopty, a miner, on the 30th of May 1925.[1] Together, they had three children.[1]

Role in the French Resistance[edit]

In 1941, organised and lead women in demonstrations supporting the Nord-Pas-de-Calais miners' strike.[1] They blocked roads to prevent the passage of police cars and German armored vehicles.[1]

She was arrested for her participation in the strike but shortly released.[1] On the 14th of May 1942, she was arrested again but escaped through a toilet window.[1] Local newspapers published her photos and declared her a wanted criminal.[1]

Mopty became a liason agent for Charles Debarge.[1] She transported weapons and explosives and looked for hideouts for the resistance.[1]

Death and legacy[edit]

On the 16th of September 1942, Mopty was arrested by the French gendarmerie while her group were planning to attack a firing squad.[1] She was sentenced to death in Arras.[1] As the Germans did not execute women in France, she was deported on January 12th to Brussels and then moved to Cologne.[1] On January 18th, she was executed.[1]

In 1948, her body was repatriated to France.[1]

Her name is inscribed on the Harnes war memorial and on the steles of Montigny-en-Gohelle and Villeparisis.[1]
