DEDE AHMET Myftar Ahmataj[edit]

Dede Ahmet Myftar Ahmataj, (Baba Madhi) is the cleric, patriot, Bektashi erudite, who in essence deserves to be called so. He has remained in the history of Bektashi Order, in the most serious climax of appraisal. Dede Ahmet was appointed as the 'Head Grandfather of the World Headquarters of the Bektashi Order', in 1948 in Tirane, Albania. He served the order and held the title until his passing in year 1980.

He remains highly considerate not only in Albania and in the local ethnical plan but even broader, in the whole world of faith and predication of wisdom. DEDE AHMET the man who could synchronize perfectly life with civilization, faith with wisdom, speaking with acting, wisdom with justice, reflecting this way the real human image. He has been one of the greatest clerics that rarely, very rarely and in great difficulties are born people and epochs. Dede Ahmet was born in February 22, 1916, to the Ahmataj family, in Brataj village, of Vlora. His father was Myftar Ahmataj and his mother Miroshe. He was orphaned at a very early age, with his older brother Kadri. He would latter state that during that time, he first felt the contact of God, which was to accompany him throughout his life. He completed his early studies throughout 1924-1929 in Vlora. In 1937 he enrolls in military service. After dismissal, he wears the cleric robe in the Bektashi Tekke of Bllaca, Diber, at Baba Zeneli. Dede Ahmeti would serve there until 1939. Afterwards he serves in the Tekke's of Elbasan, Turan of Tepelene, Vlore, until 1942. From this time until 1944, he joines the Albanian anti-fashist army, in the 18th Brigade. He served in the partizan battalions of Martanesh, Elbasan and Peza. In year 1943, he was sent in internment in Portoromano of Durres. After the internment he carries on to serve in the partizan battalion of Shijaku, where he receives deep wounds, the consequences of which where to persist on his health through out his life. In 1945, Dede Ahmeti serves in the Tekke of Kuzum Baba in Vlora, where he is accorded the title "Father of Honor" in year 1948. He is remembered as one of the most loved and respected Bektashi spiritual leaders, with popularity growing in Vlora and throughout Albania. Bektashi believers and otherwise, bore witness to the numerous Miracles of Dede Ahmeti. To this day, there are living persons in Albania who not only cite but swear witness to the Miracles of Dede Ahmeti.

In 1948 he is appointed Head Grandfather of the World Headquarters of the Bektashi Order, in Tirana, Albania. He works and serves the Bektashi order in Albania and throughout the world, while being on the forefront of Peace Conferences. He was fluent in arab and turkish, and translated a variety of Bektashi books and literature as well as the Holy Qur'an. During the communist regime in Albania, he suffered internment in Drizar, Mallakaster, with his dervish Reshat Bardhi, through years 1958 - 1976. Upon finishing internment, Dede Ahmeti moves to Tirana, in year 1976, at his older brother's residence (Kadri Ahmataj, married to Mergjyze Ahmataj). Since the World Headquarters of the Bektashi Order remained shut down, as did all religious institutions in communist Albania, Dede Ahmeti remains at Kadri's residence, where although constantly under heavy state surveillance, he preaches the word of God, the teachings of love and compassion, and continues to illegally work for the Bektashi Path, until his passing on July 10, 1980.

Dede Ahmet Myftar Ahmataj is survived by his nieces, Ms. Miroshe Didani, Ms. Violeta Popi, Ms. Suzana Dika, and only nephew Mr. Kujtim Kadri Ahmataj (married to Ms. Valentina Bardhi). After the fall of communism in the early 90's in Albania, Kujtim Ahmataj worked as the General Secretary to the World Headquarters of the Bektashi Order for over a decade, growing and developing the Headquarters programs and activities to successful new heights. Through his unique vision and dedication, the Bektashi Order would finally rejoice in finding its place in society together with the other long forbidden religions in the now pluralist Albania.

Kujtim Ahmataj, is the author of various publishing, of both laic and religious nature. "The Barefooted Saint", is one of the most revered books of the author, dedicated to Dede Ahmet Myftar Ahmataj. It won the "Best Publishing of the Year Award" in Albania, and it has been republished over three times, while it is currently being translated in English. Other notable publishings of Kujtim Ahmataj include: "Servant of Servants"," When i toyed with the moon", "Seek thyself", "Harhka's servant", etc.

"- My son, - continued the mërshid, - a dervish must accumulate all wise sayings of the bektashian sofër, he must bypass life’s pleasures and see them as something forbidden to him. The dervish should be careful and not say impulsive words, as he won’t be able to take them back again. Don’t forget this way, my son. Ask guidance. Be shield for the one who asks shielding, wisdom for the one who understands. Be devoted to God, for God orders devotion toward Him. Ask from God the rank of His martyrs, so as God may join you to the ones whom He has granted divine bliss. Be deep in understanding Him. Do never forget the sublime learning of the bektashian wisdom:

In humility be like the earth,

In wisdom be like the sun,

In generosity be like the river,

In confidentiality be like the night,

In amanet be like the death. "

He is the testimony of faith, a rare demonstration of human miracle, trusted witness of the divine gift, promoter of the new existence, further evolution of Bektashism in Albania, and in all other countries where the heart of faith beats for God, for the Only and true God.

He overcomes time with the holy attributes, giving humanity his soul, hope and unforgettable presence from all and for all, shining messages calling us to the appeal of virtue, in order to transform in flourishing garden the spiritual deserts where it has germinated the indifference, arrogance, prepotency, egoism, and the being found of material life, the appearance of various ideologies and personalities with acts and evil thinking.

DEDE AHMET has remained a respectful and loved religious personality in Albania and throughout the world, and his Tyrbe located nead the World Headquarters of the Bektashi Order, in Tirana, Albania, continues to attract believers and devotees of all religious backgrounds. His words, actions and plain out miracles, remain a legacy witnessed by many and respected by all. His songs of love and devotion to the divine grace echo through eternity.

Albanian Prime minister, S. Berisha, during the first democratic years in post communistic Albania, decorated Dede Ahmet Myftar Ahmataj with the "Order of the Torch of Democracy" (Post-mortem).

The municipality of the city of Vlora conferred him the title “Honorary Citizen of Vlora”. A great monument dedicated to the beloved saint, by the renown artist Ms. Muharrem Fejzo stands in one of the main squares in the center of the beautiful city of Vlora by the steps leading up to Kuzum Baba.

In 2001, Albapost, in honour of distinguished Albanian personalities, dedicated a series of national stamps to Dede Ahmet Myftar Ahmataj.

Kontribute të Dede Ahmet Myftar Ahmataj, në Luftën Antifashiste Nacionalçlirimtare

Dede Ahmet Ahmataj i përket atij brezi atdhetarësh, të cilët në çdo moment politik që kalonte atdheu i ndjenë dhe i kuptuan detyrat historike që shtroheshin para çdo shqiptari. E jo vetëm kaq, por ata u angazhuan me gjithë forcën e tyre në shërbim të interesave jetike të vendit. Në skenën e historisë Ai nuk qëndroi në rolin e soditësit që pret, por të veprimtarit që paraprin. Kur gjykata e historisë shqyrton veprimtarinë e Tij, figura e Dede Ahmetit lartësohet, sepse vepra e Tij pavarësisht mantelit fetar (madje edhe këtë e vuri në shërbim të realitetit të aspiratave të bashkëkombësve të vet) qëndron gjithnjë në krah të figurave më të ndritura të vendit tonë, krah tyre në panteonin e lavdisë së shqiptarizmit. Sigurisht ky mendim dhe vlerësim ka në bazë sentencën filozofike të dogmës së bektashizmit: “Pa atdhe nuk ka fe.”
