The Rhode Island Foundation is a non-profit public charity established in 1916 by the Rhode Island Hospital Trust Company. It is one of the nation's oldest charitable foundations[1] and the largest foundation in Rhode Island.[2]

The Foundation manages and distributes funds based upon its strategic initiatives of "Economic Security, Educational Success, and Healthy Lives". The initial endowment, donated by United States Senator Jesse H. Metcalf, was $10,000 (the equivalent of $233,000 in 2019)[3] and has grown to $970,000,000 as of 2018. Donors to the Foundation elect to have the Foundation determine where the money should go, or they can determine how they want their donation to be distributed.[4]

Members of the Foundation's Board have included John Nicholas Brown II, the honorable Maureen McKenna Goldberg, and Mayor Jorge Elorza; current members of the board include Janet Robinson and the honorable Ernest C. Torres.[5]
