W. Cornell Appleton AIA (1877–1970) was an American architect in practice from 1917 to 1966. During his career he led the firm of Appleton & Stearns, successors to the well-known firm of Peabody & Stearns.
Life and career[edit]
William Cornell Appleton was born May 21, 1877 in Jersey City, New Jersey. He was educated at the Rhode Island School of Design and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, graduating from the latter in 1901. He immediately joined the well-known firm of Peabody & Stearns and was quickly promoted to chief designer. In 1914 he became a junior partner. In 1917, after the deaths of Peabody and Stearns, Appleton continued the firm in partnership with Stearns' son and assistant, Frank A. Stearns, and in 1919 they renamed the firm Appleton & Stearns. Stearns died suddenly in 1922, but Appleton continued the firm under the same name until his retirement in 1966.
