Paula Woodward (born November 15, 1946) is an investigative reporter, author and speaker. 1(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Paula_Woodward_-_Author,_Local_TV_Investigative_Journalist#cite_note-1) She reported for KUSA-TV in Denver, CO, establishing the 9 Wants to Know Investigative Unit that is still an integral part of the television station’s news coverage.2(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Paula_Woodward_-_Author,_Local_TV_Investigative_Journalist#cite_note-2) During her tenure at KUSA-TV, she reported for NBC Network News[3], The Denver Post,4(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Paula_Woodward_-_Author,_Local_TV_Investigative_Journalist#cite_note-3) and the now defunct Rocky Mountain News. Woodward was inducted into the National Academy of TV Arts & Sciences Heartland Chapter Silver Circle in 2006 [5], the Colorado Society of Professional Journalists' Hall of Fame in 2009 [6], and the Denver Press Club's Hall of Fame in 2009.[7]

Woodward wrote a non-fiction book, published in 2016, which is an examination of the investigation into JonBenét Ramsey’s Christmas murder in Colorado in 1996. [8] In the book, We Have Your Daughter, Woodward publishes police reports, personal letters and other evidence never seen before.[9] The book won the 2016 Indies Silver True Crime Award. [10], finalist in the Colorado Best Book Award for Nonfiction in June 2017 [11] and finalist in True Crime from the National Indie Excellence Awards[12].

Currently, Woodward is a renowned national speaker and makes appearances on TV newscasts about the Ramsey investigation, investigative reporting, and the importance of journalists maintaining objectivity. [14]

EARLY LIFE

Growing up poor on a former United States Army post along the western edge of Montana’s Miles City in the 1950’s helped turn Paula Woodward into one of the toughest, most resilient investigative reporters of her day. She has fought for those who couldn’t fight for themselves. [15] The middle child of two sisters, she waited until their parents went into town to climb the forbidden water tower, race up the trees and the rickety rooftops of the decaying officers’ quarters at Fort Keogh where she lived. The three sisters helped breed the pigs and cattle and broke horses for cowboys. Often alone on 500,000 acres while herding cattle on horseback, Woodward quickly learned to rely on herself and her horse, whether it was Keokuk or Jacobi. She got a taste for storytelling by talking to her steady companion, her part-Collie, part-German Shepherd dog, Blaze. She graduated from Montana State University-Bozeman with a Bachelor’s degree in English in 1968.

CAREER

Woodward taught for several years, and started her reporting career with KDEN All-News Radio in Denver [16] before joining the number one news station in Denver, KUSA TV in 1977. She continually scooped her colleagues and competing reporters at other stations with exclusive high-profile interviews, hidden camera stings and powerful storytelling. [17] She caught city workers slacking off and documented their time not working by doing intensive surveillance for several weeks. [18] She uncovered public corruption, including exposing the secrets of a recruiting scandal at the University of Colorado in Boulder in part by obtaining a grand jury report that investigated sexual improprieties in the recruiting process. [19]

After many of her stories, top government officials changed policies, police jailed suspects, and state legislators created new laws. The Rocky Mountain News and The Denver Post wrote editorials about her exploits in commentaries and cartoons while some fans put bumper stickers on their cars reading, “I brake for Paula Woodward.”[16] Other reporters resigned themselves to watching her exclusive jailhouse interviews with suspects like Willie Clark accused of murdering a Denver Broncos Player[20], and officials confessing to crimes she’d caught them committing on camera.[21][22]

Her sources trusted her and were so loyal, she’d often be the only reporter on the scene of breaking news, as other journalists were waiting at the wrong place, miles from the action. Her stories went national on the major broadcast networks and in national newspapers.[23]

Woodward’s reputation grew with the murder of JonBenét Ramsey in 1996.[24] She refused to report spoon-fed facts at press conferences unless she’d double-sourced them.[25] She landed exclusive interviews with members of the Ramsey family because she fairly reported their side of the story, after prosecutors and law enforcement told theirs.[26] After several years passed, the Boulder District Attorney cleared parents John and Patsy Ramsey of wrong-doing and suspicion with an apology.[27][28]

After 32 years in television investigative reporting, she resigned to write the non-fiction book, We Have Your Daughter, an examination of the investigation of the JonBenét Ramsey murder. [29][30]

“I have always concentrated on telling stories that make a difference,” Woodward says. And she still does.

HONORS

As an investigative reporter, Woodward's peers have honored her with some 50 investigative reporting accolades, including multiple Emmy, Edward R. Murrow and Society of Professional Journalism awards. [29]

“I have always concentrated on telling stories that make a difference,” Woodward says. And she still does.
