Language Immersion

Sources: Hummel p.45, 49-50

Subtractive Bilingualism (Hummel, 44)

Certain language immersion programs are merely transitional and can result in Subtractive Bilingualism, a case where the target L2 language is emphasized at the expense of the L1. This occurs when language immersion programs initially teach in the pupil's L1, but then increase L2 instruction until there is little to no L1 instruction anymore. This phasing out process can cause language attrition and other similar consequences.

Developmental Bilingual Program (45)

Instructional programs that emphasize adequate proficiency in both the L1 and the L2. These programs try to provide equal exposure to both languages.
