Background[edit]

Niue is a single island nation located within the South Pacific Ocean to the northeast of New Zealand, in a triangle between Tonga, Samoa, and the Cook Islands. It

When a tropical cyclone impacts Niue, it can have major social, economic and environmental repercussions, as well as the potential to set back their national development progress.[1]

Between 1969 and 2010, a total of 63 tropical cyclones passed within 400 km (250 mi) of Alofi, with most of these systems occurring when an El Niño occurred over the Pacific Ocean.[2] Some of these systems have only produced marginal gale force winds in a part of the island, while others have produced hurricane force wind speeds. The strongest and most damaging tropical cyclone on record to impact Niue, was Severe Tropical Cyclone Heta which impacted Niue during January 2004.

When a tropical cyclone is forecast to impact Niue, the Fiji Meteorological Service (FMS) issues special weather bulletins, which contain either a tropical cyclone alert, gale, storm or a hurricane warning for the island.[1] These weather bulletins are passed to the Niue Meteorological Service which edits them for clarity and translates them into Niuean, before disseminating them to various stakeholders including the broadcasting corporation and the disaster council.[1] The disaster council subsequently issues either a blue, yellow or red alert for the island, depending on various factors such as storm intensity and how close the system is to the island.[1]
