Notes[edit]

  • The spelling of orangutan was not standardized until well into the 20th century. Common alternate spellings included orang-utan, orang-outang.
  • Similarly, in common usage, orangutan, chimpanzee, gorilla, monkey and ape were often interchangeable terms without particular concern for taxonomic distinction.
  • Many early 20th century orangutans and chimpanzees were named Jiggs (and/or Maggie) after the main character(s) of the comic strip Bringing Up Father. The joke was that the apes, like Jiggs, were barely civilized but were trying to imitate the behavior of their betters.
