Henry Joshua (1934-2021) was an American chemist.

Life[edit]

Henry Joshua was born in Hamburg, Germany, as the third child of Max Joshua and Elisabeth Eisenmann. Elisabeth Eisenmann was the daughter of Jacob Eisenmann, founder of the Eisenmann Synagogue in Antwerp.

Due to the rise of the Nazis, the Joshua family moved to Switzerland, but they were deported. The Joshua family then moved to The Hague, Netherlands, and to Asterdorp, from which they were deported to Westerbork transit camp, then to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp where Max Joshua died, then to the Biberach internment camp Ilag V-B where they were held with civilians from the Channel Islanders. Because the Joshua family had obtained Paraguayan passports, they received better treatment than stateless Jews. Henry Joshua and Robert G. Newman were on the same transport from Bergen-Belsen to Biberach (personal communication, 2013).
