The Delegation of the European Union to Mexico is the diplomatic mission that represents the European Union before the United Mexican States.

In 2017, the EU was Mexico's second largest export market after the United States. The EU was also Mexico's third-largest source of imports in 2017, after the United States and China.[1]

  • 1989 - Establishment of Delegation
  • 26 April 1991 - Framework Agreement for Cooperation between the European Community and Mexico
  • 8 December 1997 - EU-Mexico Economic Partnership, Political Coordination and Co-operation Agreement
    • On 8 December 1997, Mexico became the first Latin American country to sign an agreement with the EU, the EU-Mexico Economic Partnership, Political Coordination and Co-operation Agreement. This Agreement covered political dialogue, trade relations and cooperation.

EU-Mexico "agreement in principle" was signed in Brussels between the Mexican Government and the EU. The Agreement will replace the previous 1997 Agreement and will go into effect once ratifies by all


Role[edit]

The Delegation officially represents the EU in Mexico. It mandate includes:[3]

  • Representing the EU before Mexican authorities
  • Promoting political and economic relations between Mexico and the EU
  • Continuing dialogue with Mexico through the Global Agreement
  • Promoting the fulfillment of the objectives of the Strategic Partnership
  • Informing the Mexican public about the EU and its subsidiary bodies
  • Overseeing the monitoring of bilateral relations in the areas of politics, economy, trade and cooperation
  • Promoting and defending the values and interests of the EU in Mexico
  • Cooperating with public entities and civil society organizations in Mexico
  • Providing direct humanitarian aid through the Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations
  • Participating in the proper functioning of the Common Foreign and Security Policy
