British bantamweight boxer Joe Murray claimed partisan judging after he lost to a Chinese, and he had the backing of his head coach Terry Edwards. Murray's accusation came on a day when Chinese admitted doctoring television pictures and dubbing the voice of a young singer at the opening ceremony, and also kitting out volunteers as spectators to fill empty seats in stadia. Murray lost 17-7 to China's Yu Gu. 'They were giving him points for everything making me work for every thing. I was hitting him clean and still they weren't giving me points,' said Murray.

Edwards, Murray's Coach, agreed with his fighter. 'The judges took it away from him. I thought they were very generous to the Chinese. You expect a slight bias but you come to the Olympic Games and expect a level playing field.' There are five judges for Olympic bouts, none of whom were British or Chinese for Murray's fight. Points are recorded when at least three simultaneously press their buttons to record a hit but the reaction of the crowd can influence them.

I am not saying Joe would have won but I am saying they forced him to do some things that weren't in his game plan. He didn't box the best I have seen him box but scoring makes a difference to the tactics and those had to be changed because of the scoring. The Ukrainians have already protested about the judging when one of their fighters lost to a Chinese,' said Edwards. Murray's defeat followed the disappointment of Richard Faulds, the 2000 Olympic champion, who finished only sixth in the double trap, the last place finish of diving pair Tonia Couch and Stacie Powell in the 10 metres platform and seventh for Euan Burton in the light middleweight judo. Burton has had the special attention of Sir Clive Woodward, the British Olympic Association's performance director but admitted: 'I gave it my best but this was massively disappointing. I thought when I got here I'd be one of the contenders for a medal. I didn't score the big scores, and to win medals you've got to get big scores quickly.'
