Table headings
  1. ^ Former or current names or variant spellings with some official usage or currency in English.
  2. ^ For towns with county status, the surrounding county is given. Where a town has straddled a county boundary, its county in 1899 is given first; the 1898 act assigned such towns entirely to the county where the majority of the population lived. Belfast straddled Antrim and Down before 1898 and was a county borough thereafter; Antrim is listed first here because most of the area and population is in that county, where the original borough was entirely located.
  3. ^ For the 117 parliamentary boroughs, the year is the first in which the town is known to have sent members to the House of Commons of Ireland. The link is to the article about the constituency.
  4. ^ For the 33 boroughs not disfranchised by the Acts of Union 1800, the year and number is the year when the borough was abolished and the number of MPs it sent to the United Kingdom House of Commons. The link is to the article about the constituency.
  5. ^ How the 1835 report of the Municipal Corporations (Ireland) Commission described the borough; and how it was treated by the Municipal Corporations (Ireland) Act 1840.
  6. ^ The year(s) in which the town had commissioners appointed, under either a local act, the 1828 Act, the 1840 Act, or the 1854 Act. The end date indicates either promotion to urban district status or demotion to non-municipal status; compare the "Urban district" column to see which.
  7. ^ When the town gained the status of urban district (under the 1898 act) or urban sanitary district (under the 1874? 1878? act). An end date, unless otherwise footnoted, indicates demotion to non-municipal status.
  8. ^ Dates between which the town had borough status
  9. ^ Dates between which the borough had city status
  10. ^ Dates between which the town had county status (county corporate before 1898; county borough from 1899 to 1972 (Northern Ireland) or 2001 (Republic of Ireland); local government area termed a "city" (since 2001 in the Republic of Ireland)
  11. ^ Current jurisdiction ("Rep.I." republic of Ireland or "NI" Northern Ireland); current local government status if any; otherwise the date it was abolished and the local government area it was merged into.

  • 1913-14 Tullow:
    • We referred in our last report to the difficulty which had occurred in carrying on the administration of the municipal affairs of the town of Tullow, owing to the absence of a sufficient number of persons qualified to act as Commissioners. Acting on the representations made by us, the Carlow County Council appointed five members to fill up the vacancies, thus restoring the body of the Commissioners to its full membership. These members, however, resigned office in December after certain liabilities of the Commissioners had been discharged, and a dead¬lock was again created. No nominations for the vacancies were forthcoming at the elections required to be held in January last, and, accordingly, there is still no body of persons qualified to act as Commissioners. In the absence of further steps being taken by the Carlow County Council, the administration of the affairs of the town cannot be carried on, and there is no machinery provided by law by which the town of Tullow can be re-absorbed for all purposes into the rural district in which it is situated.
