While road signs in the Republic of Ireland use "Derry", the Central Statistics Office uses "Londonderry" in publications which include Northern Ireland data supplied by Northern Ireland authorities.[1]

Ordnance Survey Ireland maps retained "Londonderry" for decades,[2] in part due to a lack of funding for a comprehensive revision of earlier surveys.[3] Half-inch map first edition was 1911, last was 1971; Sheet 1 mostly covered Free State/Republic but reached as far as "Derry" (city and county).[4] Discovery series from later 1980s, sheet 7 covering "Londonderry" was OSNI only. First edition of Road Atlas of Ireland in 1980s used what? Current all-island maps produced in conjunction with the Ordnance Survey of Northern Ireland (now Land & Property Services) use "Derry/Londonderry/Doire".

OSI using "Derry" for city and county:

  • half-inch index (Harvard dates 1962–68, which I guess is when the edition was produced, and hence also the index)
  • one-inch index (Harvard dates 1856–1914, but that is clearly when the maps were produced; I surmise the index is same time as half-inch index, hence 1960s)
  • Discovery 1:50k index (itself dated Jan 1998)

Statutes[edit]

Pre-partitition statute using "Derry" for city:

Foyle Fisheries Act 1952 http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/eli/1952/act/5/enacted/en/print.html:

    • "the Foyle Area” means the area comprising the fishery district, originally created and defined as the Londonderry District by an order made on the 9th day of July, 1855

    • sec 3
      • rentcharge of £250 per annum settled upon the Lord Bishop of Derry and his successors for ever by Statute 3 and 4 Anne Chapter 1

    • sec 16

The corresponding Foyle Fisheries Act (Northern Ireland) 1952 has the same text except http://www.legislation.gov.uk/apni/1952/5/schedule/THIRD/paragraph/3 where the southernmost boundary of the county of Londonderry meets the river
