Mullinalaghta (statutory spelling Mullanalaghta; Mullach na Leachta[1]) is a district in northeast County Longford in Ireland, described as a "half parish", because it forms part of the civil parish of Columbkille and also part of the Roman Catholic parish of "Columkille East and Scrabby" or "Mullinalaghta and Loch Gowna". Prior to zzz [1832 or 1839?], the Catholic parishes of Columbcille, County Longford, and Scrabby, County Cavan, were coterminous with the civil parishes of the same names; in that year "Columkille East", the portion on the eastern shore of Lough Gowna, was separated from Columbcille and merged with Scrabby. The alternative name "Mullinalaghta and Loch Gowna" reflect the location of the merged parish's two parish churches in Mullinalaghta (East Columkille) and Lochgowna (Scrabby).
The electoral division (ED) of Mullanalaghta in 1864 comprised 8 townlands (Aghanoran, Cloonagh, Corbaun or Leitrim, Derrycassan, Dring, Kilmore, Larkfield, and Toome) together with some uninhabited islands in Lough Gowna, including Swan's Island and White Island.[ref 1864, 1911] [zzz openstreetmap shows the cp east of Lough Gowna has the 8 DED tlds plus 4 SE [Creevy ED: Culleenmore, Mullinroe, Clooneen, Druminacrehir tlds] and 2 SW [Dalystown ED: Ballinulty U & L tlds] of the DED. rev_872964307 says tlds in RCp are all 4 in Creevy and 7 of 8 in DED, excluding Dring.] The crossroads hamlet of Mullinalaghta is in the townland of Cloonagh. The Catholic parish is in the diocese of Ardagh and Clonmacnoise; the civil parish is in the barony of Granard; the ED was formerly in the Granard poor law union, Granard rural district, and Scraddy No. 2 dispensary district.
The areas of operation of clubs of the Gaelic Athletic Association are delimited by county boundaries and Catholic parish boundaries, so that Mullinalaghta GAA represents only a half-parish and is described as the smallest club in County Longford.
