Doomsday Preppers is an American documentary television series that airs on the National Geographic Channel. The program follows various survivalists, or "preppers," preparing for the end of civilization. The series interviews people who are preparing to survive the various circumstances through which life as we know it might come to an end, including economic collapse, societal collapse, electromagnetic pulse, terrorist acts, nuclear incidents, fuel shortages, war, pandemics, etc. The interviews detail the actions that the preppers have taken, and end with an expert analysis and recommendations for improvements.

Reception[edit]

Doomsday Preppers has received varied reviews. While some see it as the logical production of a growing movement,[10] others have condemned it as an "absurd excess on display and at what an easy target the prepper worldview is for ridicule," noting, "how offensively anti-life these shows are, full of contempt for humankind."[11] Nevertheless, "The program has been a ratings bonanza, with a 60-percent male audience, with an average age of 44."[12] In response to negative comments, one prepper responded: "We don’t make it an obsession like some folks but we do spend a fair amount of time and money on it." "...you can’t always rely on the government or society to help you. The more people that are prepping minded, the better off we’ll all do."[13]

Brooklyn Bagwell, casting director for the second season, claimed "It’s the highest-rated show” in the history of the National Geographic Channel.[14]
