Wikitable question about rowspan and colspan[edit]
This is a question about the correct syntax (if that's the right word?) for using rowspan and colspan in a Wikitable. I seem to be able to use "rowspan" by itself. And I seem to be able to use "colspan" by itself. But, I can't seem to make both functions work together at the same time, with the same cell. So, what would be the exact "code" that I would type in my Wikitable if, say for example, I wanted a cell to span 5 rows and 3 columns? By the way, I want to use the "rowspan" function, if possible; not the "row height" function. Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 02:33, 29 July 2018 (UTC)
- @Joseph A. Spadaro: See Help:Table#Combined use of COLSPAN and ROWSPAN for an example. The syntax is simple like

@PrimeHunter: OK. Thanks. I am back, with my example. Below is my "original" chart. Then, below that, is my "revised" chart.
On the "original" chart, I want to add a "heading". The heading will state: Below is all of the updated information. I want this heading (cell) to span several columns and several rows.
So, I created my "revised" chart.
Everything is what I want, except for one thing. In the "revised chart", I want that "heading" to have more height (i.e., I want that row to be taller). So, as you can see, I can get the "colspan" to work well (namely, to "spread out" across all 4 columns). But, whenever I add in a "rowspan" function / code, everything gets screwed up. I tried with several variations of "syntax", punctuation, etc. It always screws up the rest of the chart.
Also: As I stated above: I want to use the "rowspan" function, if possible; not the "row height" function.

- @Joseph A. Spadaro: That is not what rowspan is for. The purpose of rowspan is to make a cell which spans multiple cells somewhere to the right or left of the cell. Each row must have at least one cell starting in that row. That is a html rule and not specific to wikitext. A table-wide rowspan="5" would have 4 rows with no cells starting. And even if this had been allowed by html, it wouldn't change the height of the row. Rows are by default only as high as needed to display their content. There are many other ways to make a tall cell with blank space, e.g. blank lines made with

- @PrimeHunter: OK. Thanks. So you are saying: that for what I want, I cannot use "rowspan", and I essentially have to use "row height" ... correct? (The problem with using "blank break spaces" is that it places the text at the top of the tall row and leaves a lot of blank white space in the rest of the tall row. As opposed to, perhaps, centering the text within a tall row.) You said there are many other ways? What are some? Other than the "row height function" and the use of "blank break spaces"? <br />both before and after the text. You can use style="height: 5em;" in the row or in the cell. You can use style="padding: 2em;" to control the whitespace around the text. I made an example with each of these four methods. There are others methods but four should be plenty. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:04, 29 July 2018 (UTC)
