Some of the original vertical blocks of the causeway along the eastern side can still be seen. In the centre of the battery is a granite war memorial designed by Sir Edward Warren. It includes a square two stepped plinth, with a pedestal surrounded by a low cast iron rail and surmounted by a tall obelisk. 207 people are named on the memorial.

Cornish Pirates Rugby Club is a Cornish professional rugby union club playing in the second tier of the English rugby union system, the RFU Championship. The club was formed in 1945 when Penzance RFC and Newlyn RFC amalgamated to form Penzance & Newlyn RFC and is based in Penzance, Cornwall. Shortly after the end of the Second World War, on 22 September 1945, the first match was played against Guy's Hospital (score). The club was renamed Cornish Pirates in 2005 and apart from one season at Kenwyn, Truro and four at the Recreation Ground, Camborne, they play at the Mennaye Field in Penzance.

Big Pool and Browarth Point (St Agnes)

Big Pool and Browarth Point is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) on the north west part of the island of St Agnes, Isles of Scilly. The SSSI was first notified in 1971 for the rare and notable plants, and for the prominent raised beach deposits at the eastern edge. Big Pool along with Little Pool are the only areas of standing water on St Agnes. The area is within the Isles of Scilly Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Isles of Scilly Heritage Coast and part of Plantlife’s Isles of Scilly Important Plant Area.

Classical sources indicate that tin was mined in Belerion and transported to Ictis, for export. Whilst there are other candidates such as Looe Island and Mount Batten, St Michael's Mount is a strong candidate for the island of Ictis with its tidal causeway to the mainland at low tide; although this is assuming that at the time of Pytheas, writing in 325 BCE, the Mount was tidal. Archaeological surveys have found 124 sherds of pottery, with a large variety of frabrics, from the period c1000 BC through to the end of the Roman occupation of Britain indicating a settlement of some significance and size. p.40 The Mount was an important harbour in medieval times with a light, dating to the fifteenth century, at the entrance and evidence of tin trading at that time. P.4

a pot containing around one thousand Roman copper coins was found, nearby, on Marazion Marsh in 1793. The corroded coins have been tentatively identified to the Emperor Victorinus: ″…these coins were much injured by the corrosion of the marine acid, but several were still perfect enough to trace the outlines of the Emperor″. There is no evidence as to when the coins were lost or buried.

Marazion Marsh history

About 63 acres (25 ha) were successfully drained for agriculture by Dr Richard Moyle, when in May 1793, the first drainage pipes were laid. Of this 36 acres (15 ha) of the area was tidal marsh which was between the sandy embankment formed by the sea and the croft. Open trenches were dug across the marsh in June and in one of the drains, at a depth of three feet, was found a pot containing around one thousand copper coins. The corroded coins have been tentatively identified to the Emperor Victorinus: ″…these coins were much injured by the corrosion of the marine acid, but several were still perfect enough to trace the outlines of the Emperor″.

Another early historical mention of Penzance (as a place for landing fish) was in 1322 in local manorial records, the town was, until the 17th century, overshadowed by its near-neighbour Marazion. Marazion was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1088 and is the oldest chartered town in Britain, having been granted this status by King Henry III in 1257.
