Cadence vocal band is an a capella group founded in 1998 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.[1] Their repertoire includes funky covers of jazz, blues, and pop tunes, and original compositions, with a sound distinguished by vocal instrumentation.
The band has seen several lineup changes, particularly at the first tenor position. The current lineup of Cadence includes Lucas Marchand (tenor), Ross Lynde (tenor), David Lane (baritone), and Kurt Sampson (bass). Lynde, while not a founding member of the group, joined a few months after its inception and is the longest serving current member.[2]
Cadence has released four studio albums.[3]
Career[edit]
Cadence was originally founded by a group of students singing together at York University in Toronto.
The original foursome were Carl Berger (baritone), Daniel Galessiere (tenor), Kevin Fox (bass), and WHOEVER ROSS REPLACED. Ross Lynde soon assumed the second tenor slot, which he has occupied ever since.
In 2000, the group released its first studio album, Frost Free, with the lineup of Berger, Lynde, Galessiere, and Fox. The album received very positive reviews in the a capella community, including five of five stars by a panel of reviewers at The Recorded A Capella Review Board.[4]
In 2002, Galessiere moved on to other projects and was replaced by tenor Dylan Bell.
Cadence's second studio album, Twenty for One, was released in 2005, featuring Bell, Lynde, Berger, and Fox. The album name is taken from a line in Joni Mitchell's song, "Drycleaner from Desmoines".
In 2007, both Bell and Fox left the group, Bell to pursue music with instruments, Fox to join The Swingle Singers. Their places were taken by tenor Aaron Jensen and bass Kurt Sampson.[5]
Jensen became the group's principal arranger, and contributed three original compositions to their next album, Speak Easy (2010).
A Christmas album, Cool Yule, was released in 2011.
Jensen announced his departure in 2011, to focus on composition, arranging, and other projects. Lucas Marchand assumed the first tenor position in January, 2012.[6]
Carl Berger retired from singing in 2014 after developing a polyp in his throat. He continues to manage the band. The baritone position was assumed by David Lane, a recent graduate of St Francis Xavier University whose vocal instrumentalization and beatboxing had drawn the attention of Kurt Sampson.
